Established in 1952, Huazhong University of Science & Technology is a public research university situated in Hongshan District of Hubei province, China. The university was originally named as Huazhong Institute of Technology. Later, it merged with Wuhan Urban Construction Institute and Tongji Medical University and was called Huazhong University of Science and Technology. HUST is directly affiliated to the Ministry of Education of China, the World Health Organisation (WHO) and Medical Council of India (MCI). Huazhong University of Science & Technology was ranked 47th in ‘Asia University Rankings 2019’, 400th in ‘QS Global World Ranking 2020’, 29th Best Global University in Asia by the US News, 9th Best Global University in China by the US News and 29th for its Civil Engineering programmes. 

Infrastructure, Campus & Courses

Huazhong University of Science & Technology offers 98 undergraduate programmes, 214 graduate programmes and 183 PhD programmes. Many of the subjects offered at the university have been ranked high by recognised education portals like the US News, Top Universities and Times Higher Education (THE). The Clinical, pre-clinical and Health programme at the university was ranked 151 in 2020 rankings, Engineering & Technology at 61st position, Life Sciences at 301st position, Physical Sciences at 251st position, Business and Economics at 201st position and Social Sciences at 301st position by THE. The campus area of Huazhong University of Science & Technology is over 467 hectares. Its location in Wuhan city makes it affordable for international students as the living cost here is lower than in Shanghai or Beijing. The picturesque environment of the university campus has over 72% greenery coverage. Because of its location at the foot of Yujia Mountain and next to the East Lake, Huazhong University of Science & Technology is called the ‘University in the Forest’. 

Student Diversity & Accomplishments

Huazhong University of Science & Technology has more than 55,000 full-time students enrolled in various levels and programmes. Out of the total, about 30,000 are pursuing Bachelor programmes, over 17,000 are Master candidates and about 7,300 are doctoral candidates. Over 2,000 international students from all over the world are currently enrolled in HUST. One of the many reasons why HUST is an attraction for international students is its wide range of programmes in the English language. This makes it easier for foreign students to cope up with the environment soon. HUST is one of the first batches of universities to be supported by the ‘Double First-Class’ initiative. This was supported by ‘985 Project’ and ‘211 Project’ before.
