About National Institute of Science and Technology

  • The National Institute of Science & Technology (NIST) was established in the year 1996 by a group of academicians educated in the top Institutes of India & abroad.

  • The founder Director, Prof Sangram Mudali is B.Tech from IIT Kanpur (1985) & MS from University of Houston, USA (1987).

  • He & his wife Mrs. Geetika Mudali, Placement Director (B.Tech-Osmania University, MS-NJIT, USA) left USA to establish a world class Institute in their home state of Orissa.

  • Within a few years the reputation of the Institute spread far and wide and it admitted students only from the top 20% of the Orissa Joint Entrance Examinations and All India Entrance Examinations.

  • Not a single seat of the Institute has been vacant in the last 17 years. Within a short span of 17 years, it has produced 4 BOYSCAST faculty scholars who have been funded by Government of India to pursue postgraduate research in the top Institutes in USA and Germany.

  • NIST has produced 3 FullBright Scholars. Three of its faculty has won the Samant Chandrasekhar Young Scientist Award given by the Government of Orissa. Two AICTE funded Emeritus Professors worked at NIST.

  • The faculty of the Institute has been awarded 3 URSI Young Scientist Awards. More than 25 Post doctorate scholarships have been awarded to the Institute faculty.

  • The faculties of the Institute are alumni of IIT's, IISc, ISI, Jadavpur University and Calcutta University etc.

  • More than 35 faculty of the Institute are from the IITs alone which is a testimony to its ability to attract and retain top-notch faculty.

  • The faculties of the Institute have published more than 250 journal papers in refereed journals and are authors of about 24 books published by reputed publishing houses.

  • The Institute also has its own publishing house "NIST Press". The Institute has received a number of grants, projects, special funding, travel funding, SDPs, FIST grant, scholarships, etc., from the DST, CSIR, AICTE, IT companies, etc.

  • The faculty of the Institute has fully committed themselves to the Institute and the turnover ratio, i.e., number of faculty leaving the Institute in a year, is less than 10% which is extremely low as compared to similar academic Institutes.

Awards & Rankings

  • NIST has been ranked 28 in India by DataQuest - CMR Survey Report 2013-2014.

  • NAAC has Accredited NIST with Grade A with a high score of 3.22

Director Message

It is a great pleasure to welcome the new Batch of 2016 to a temple of modern learning called NIST. The founder of NIST, Shri Surendra Mudali had a dream and a vision to transform NIST into a mecca of technical and professional education and journey has well begun. As we step into our 21st year (1996-2016) we would be well advised to pause and ponder for a moment about what a fantastic journey we have had and also the challenges of the future. Delving into the past brings us memories of small batches (first batch was only 180 students) and younger faculty (I was only 33 when I had joined). The events such as Waves, Sankalp were meager as compared to the mega events as they are now. But one thing remains the same – the huge energy, talent and enthusiasm of our student community which keeps us challenged throughout the year.

The year 2015-2016 was a stupendous year. The Institute grabbed the 69th rank in the first ever ranking done by the Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD), Govt of India. The NIRF ranking are India’s most reliable rankings so far. Furthermore the Institute made a mark in R & D as a technology partner in “India’s one and only smart village – Chottkei (Angul,Orissa)” which was made possible by NIST and SunMoksha engineers working in tandem. Many new technologies were developed and disseminated to the industry. Another major breakthrough was our continuous leadership in the Semiconductor arena by winning the CADENCE Design contest two times in a row. Our students created a new benchmark by winning the Wipro Earthian Award 2016. The Institute proved to be a role model in Green and Sustainable by bagging the Best Performance Award in Afforestation and Plantation (Department of Forests, Govt of Orissa) and Best Energy Conservation Award (Dept of Energy, Govt of Orissa).

On the academic front, two of the brightest NISTians won the University Gold Medals for being toppers among all colleges in their respective departments in the University. That this could have been more number of medals will remain as a challenge for us in the years to come. The most significant achievements have been in the field of Placement. Our traditional recruiters such as Wipro, Infosys, Cap Gemini, Mahindra, Mindtree reposed their tremendous faith in our students by hiring three digit numbers. Core companies such as SAP, Huawei, Sankalp Semiconductors, L &T Technologies raised the bar by offering salary packages as high as Rs. 10 Lacs per annum. Our students have received more than 650 offers as on date making this one of the best placement seasons so far. Hats off to the Placement Department!

Students have won tons of laurels for themselves and the Institute. Right from bagging the Google Summer of Code fellowships, INSA fellowships, they have secured admissions to prestigious institutes in USA, Taiwan, Japan for PhD programs. Students have won significantly in InterCollege fests and successfully participated in Robocon, SAE events, IIT technoevents. Student clubs have matured with age and are wowing audiences with social messages during Raahagiri and other programs throughout the year. NIST does not believe in living in an island. Our students are making a difference in their surroundings be it through the NSS, Counselling Services, Astronomy workshops, Robotics Summer Programs for School Children, Public Library, Old age homes, Destitute children homes, etc. In the planning is a grand Public Library of Science & Technology on the eve of our 20th Year Celebrations.

On the infrastructure side, about 600 students moved into the new Hall of Residence –II, making NIST one of the almost-fully on-campus residential colleges of the country. The new Mechanical and Civil Engineering Building is off to a great start and will be completed by end of this year. The much-awaited Odisha’s largest college indoor stadium should be ready by end of the year as well.

Long ago the Bard had said “All’s well that ends well”. Looking forward to welcoming the new batch of 2016 and kudos to the 12000 alumni who have brought glory and fame to the Institute.

Prof. Sangram Mudali
