Sam Higginbottom Institute of Agriculture, Technology & Sciences Vision and Mission

Mission :

To ensure successive development of Agricultural Education, Research, Extension, Science, Technology and other disciplines in the State.

SHECS is an Educational and Charitable Society undertakes all levels of educational activities, i.e., primary, secondary and higher, professional education, Agriculture and technology for all round improvement in the quality of life in India. The SHECS operates with the vision “Gospel and Plough” which means Gospel of Jesus Christ preached with power for the improvement in the quality of life of all human beings living on earth. The power of Gospel could be seen in the power of knowledge shared, technology dissemination, technology development, technology innovations and ultimate usage. Thus, the Plough indicates technology part. The mission “Feed the Hungry” (Jesus replied, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat” Matthew 14:16). This word of Jesus Christ gave a drive for mission to the Founder Dr. Sam Higginbottom and he landed in India to develop and establish an Agricultural Institute at Allahabad. Thus the power of Gospel was expressed in the actions of Dr. Sam Higginbottom by establishing an institution that could cater the needs of peasants and the students of agriculture. Ultimately preparing citizens imbued with the zeal of service to the mankind by promoting and disseminating technology that would ensure food security to India.

In order to continue in our mission under the vision of Gospel & Plough, it is important for the institution to be financially viable and technically sound and spiritually living. Hon'ble Vice Chancellor proposed following measures must be taken in the next 5-10 years for achieving the three-fold strength for the institution:

1) Economic Viability
The institution cannot survive only on the fees received from the students and learners. Education is not a commercial venture but it is deeply rooted in the strength of responsibility for social change. Education is to bring about change in the attitude of people and making them more responsible citizens and stewards of the planet – Earth. It is important that besides Government/State support, the university has to spin off industries related to its field of specializations. As far as SHUATS is concerned we need to venture in Agriculture industry sector. Industries so spinned off by the university will ultimately provide job opportunity to our graduates and also for the neighbourhood people. These industries are targeted to provide better food security first for the people of India and then for the neighbours in our vicinity. In order to accomplish this vision of financial and economical viability on long term basis I would suggest we must go for a minimum size holding of farm of 2000 acres and start industries such as piggery, poultry, goatery, processing, animal husbandry and dairying, seed production for cereals, pulses and vegetables. There is also possibility of establishing olive orchards which would attract less damage from the livestock, birds or animals and give good quality oil for human consumption.

2)Technological development:
Any technology developed by the university could be appropriate to solve the problems of the farmers, agriculture system, animal husbandry, dairy technology, human health, animal health and for the society as a whole. The technology must be patented and ultimately be transformed into an industry i.e. farm implements manufacturing, small implements, bullock drawn implements, implement design and manufacture and ultimately marketing within the country and its neighbor-hood. The technology must be innovative and compatible to the societal needs.

3) Spiritual health:
The Theological college, Bible school, Yeshu Darbar ministry must pursue with all our strength and supported by the management staff, students of the university. The Theological teachers will provide counselling and guidance for the students, staff undergoing any kind of pressure or stress or needing definition of their destiny.

Hon’ble Vice Chancellor emphasized that if we move along with this three pronged approach, the institution will live long and be of greater service to the Nation and for the glory of its creator, “Lord Jesus Christ”.

He further enlightened the members that, three things are coming out of the vision statement, in order to continue our mission under the vision of ‘Gospel and Plough’. It is important for the institution to be financially viable, technically sound and spiritually living, so he proposed that measures need to be taken for the next 5-10 years to achieve this threefold strengths of the institution.

Director Message

Chancellor's message

We are glad to welcome our incoming students for the academic year 2017-18. We congratulate every student entering into the portals of our University, a choice vocation made by them, having passed through the 'All India Test' and its related procedures to be able to pursue their professional and higher educational goals in this historic University. The scenario of the gross enrolment ratio being under 30% even at a very liberal calculation, speaks of the competition for opportunities for the youth of the country for their dreams of professional and higher education. Therefore, the spirit of healthy competition, serious study and research perusal of the respective courses on the part of students, become all the more important, from day one of the academic calendar of the University.

It is also our endeavour that the enrolled students are not just book worms and lab bugs but, should be athletes in the fields of sports and games, character builders and value acquirers through moral education, to be professional achievers, eloquent speakers, effective communicators, peace promoters and should not be mere guest visitors of libraries but frequenters to the store-houses of knowledge. SHUATS, with a record history of 107 years of life and service of moulding the youth of the country, to be a new cadre of personnel to build the nation, continues to strive for academic excellence and research innovation, with corresponding infrastructure for extracurricular activities. It is the mission of the University, to increase the production levels of the Farms, the Enterprises and the Technology to feed the hungry, and strengthen the efforts of the State for food and health security for overall goal of quality of life of the people of the country specially the excluded groups of the population.

Several specialized areas of study, research, inter university partnerships and startup company collaborations were brought into focus in an effort to expose our emerging scientists, engineers, educators, extension experts, administrators, managers, health professionals, theologians and technocrats, for them, to make a career of choice even while caring for the least of the brethren. It is, therefore, a call that our students should be products of choice and not of circumstances for optimal post- study engagement. In this direction, we are gearing up for the new academic year through teaching, research, library, sports fields, professional networks and other infrastructure resources, with personal overseeing by the visionary Vice Chancellor, the Most Rev.Prof.Dr.R.B Lal and his team of committed and vibrant colleagues to be able to provide what is the best for our students.

We wish our incoming students a rewarding time of learning, grooming, equipping for the challenges of life they are likely to confront, in building their careers and enterprises so as to enrich themselves, their families and be part of the patriotic task of nation building. Protection and providence of Christ the Lord be upon all our students and the University family atlarge.
