  • Infrastructure Services provides the hardware and systems software to run campus applications. Most central campus functions are hosted on Infrastructure Services equipment, and many departmental applications as well.
  • Infrastructure Services consists of the following groups:
  • Cloud Computing: IST Virtual Private Server Services builds on the existing VM Service to offer the campus an affordable and stable virtual hosting environment. A virtual private server or virtual machine (VM) is an efficient, isolated slice of a physical machine which has no direct correspondence to any physical hardware.

  • Citrix Services are intended for UC Berkeley enterpise applications. Citrix gives you a secure one stop shop for certain UC Berkeley applications not installed on your computer (e.g. BAIRS, CalPlanning). This eliminates compatibility and security issues, such as the need to run a specific web browser version for each application.

  • Production Control: The Production Control Unit provides the work required to process batch production within Infrastructure Services, including, but not limited to, business services applications such as CARS (Accounts Receivables), Payroll, Kronos, BFS (Berkeley Financial System), HRMS (Human Resources Management System), and all of the Student Information Systems (SIS) from admission to degree.

  • Storage and Backup Services: The group provides customers with high-availability disk storage in capacities ranging from 100 Gigabytes to multiple Terabytes, for individual systems on the IST Data Center SAN, or for multi-host access anywhere on the Campus LAN through NFS/CIFS services. Disk storage for individual systems is also available over the LAN, via iSCSI. LAN-based backup services for systems of any size are available campuswide.

  • UNIX Services: Linux (RHEL5/6) operating systems support running on Dell Blade hardware as well as VMware Virtual Machines.

  • Windows Services: Windows Server 2008/2012 Standard and Enterprise operating systems support running on Dell Blade hardware and VMware Virtual Machines.

  • Data Center Operations: The group is responsible for the day-to-day operations and support of the campus Data Center, providing customers with a stable and secure operating environment for their computing equipment.

  • Business Continuity: Support for business continuity (disaster recovery and business resumption) of IST administered applications at the UC Berkeley southern California hot-site, San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC)

  • VMware Academic Program: IST has recently procured a campus license for the VMware Academic Program (VMAP). Faculty, staff, and students now have access to many VMware products for non-production and research use, at no extra charge. These include: VMware Workstation, Fusion, vCenter, vCloud Suite, vSphere, and more. The licenses may be used for instruction and non-commercial research, including labs.

  • Area 1232 Acres
