Centennial College - CC

Over the past 50 years Centennial College has transformed itself from a local community college to a worldly institution with a presence in several emerging markets, including China, India, South Korea and Brazil. Their core focus, as it has always been, is on preparing graduates to enter the work force, while offering their students distinct ways to learn to be leaders. They have worked to build lasting partnerships with local communities while preparing their graduates to succeed in a global context. Locally they continue to offer industry-recognized full- and part-time programs at four Toronto campuses. Whether in their classrooms, their labs or the community, students of Centennial experience the "real world" even before they graduate. They're job ready. And that's a fact employers have told us, as more than 94 percent of those hiring Centennial grads are satisfied or very satisfied with their hires. As a leader in internationalization, they have done extensive work teaching international students. Conversely, they are enabling more Canadian learners to have an international adventure: be it completing a semester in Spain, an internship in South Africa or a Global Citizenship learning experience in the Amazon Basin. They believe an education at Centennial is an education without borders, because the world has changed, and so have they. They have re-created their College, giving them a unique position in the marketplace and, in fact, the world. And they are now prepared for the next set of challenges: to be more innovative and entrepreneurial; to further exploit the benefits of technology; to creatively engage their employees; to build more bridges with communities and employers; to see their graduates do meaningful work and have meaningful lives.

Centennial College

The 353,300-square-foot project was designed by Diamond Schmitt Architects, which also designed the L-Block that opened at the Progress Campus in October 2010. The design features a blend of residential, teaching and event space that promises to make the mixed-use building a popular destination. The residence will feature two- and four-bedroom suites, allowing a private bedroom for every resident and a bathroom and kitchen in each suite. There will also be communal kitchens, lounge space, a yoga studio and movie screening room where students can gather together.

The striking building concept takes the shape of a quadrangle with a central courtyard to allow natural light to reach all of the residence rooms. The Culinary Arts Centre includes seven kitchen labs, a teaching restaurant, cafe and eight new classrooms with capacity for up to 600 students. The conference and events centre located on the top floor will accommodate up to 425 guests. The building will be LEED Silver-certified with a focus on sustainable “green” practices as they apply to the hospitality industry.
