FAQs

Central University of Punjab runs two PG admission pathways. The primary pathway is through CUET PG scores, where candidates who appeared in the Common University Entrance Test for PG programmes are ranked by NTA score and allocated seats. The Direct Admission route at cupadm.samarth.edu.in is a separate window, open now until July 7, 2026, for candidates applying outside the CUET PG merit list cycle or for programmes where direct evaluation is permitted. Both pathways lead to the same degree programmes at CUP's 500-acre campus in Bathinda, Punjab. The direct route does not require a CUET PG score, but candidates must meet the qualifying examination eligibility criteria as specified in the CUP PG Prospectus 2025-26.

The minimum eligibility for most MA and MSc programmes at Central University of Punjab is 50% marks in the qualifying bachelor's degree, or 45% for SC, ST, OBC-NCL, and PwD candidates. For M.Pharm programmes (Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmacognosy, Pharmacology), the minimum is 55% in a Bachelor's degree in Pharmacy, with GPAT score preferred. For M.Tech Computer Science & Technology and M.Tech Computer Science & Engineering (Cyber Security), the minimum is 55% in B.Tech/BE or MCA, with GATE score preferred. LLM requires 50% in LLB. These figures are as per the CUP PG Prospectus 2025-26; verify exact criteria on cup.edu.in or cupadm.samarth.edu.in before applying.

Central University of Punjab offers 43 PG programmes across 11 schools, with a total intake of 1,244 seats. In the 2024-25 cycle, the university received 102,858 applications for these 1,244 seats, which translates to a demand ratio of 1:83, making it one of the most competitive central universities for PG admissions in India. The most applied-to programmes are typically M.Sc. Physics (50 seats), M.Sc. Mathematics (40 seats), M.A. English (40 seats), M.A. Political Science (40 seats), M.A. Economics (40 seats), and LLM (40 seats). M.Tech programmes (15 and 12 seats) and M.A. Music (10 seats) have the fewest seats and face the stiffest competition in their respective domains.

For M.Tech. Computer Science & Technology and M.Tech. Computer Science & Engineering (Cyber Security) at CUP, GATE score is preferred but not mandatory for direct admission. Candidates with a valid GATE score are given ranking preference during the selection process. For M.Pharm. programmes (Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmacognosy, and Pharmacology), a GPAT score is also preferred but not mandatory. The minimum qualifying percentage for M.Tech is 55% in B.Tech/BE/MCA, and for M.Pharm it is 55% in B.Pharm (50% for SC/ST/OBC-NCL/PwD). Candidates without GATE or GPAT scores may still be considered for seats if they meet the basic eligibility criteria and seats remain available after preference-based allocation.

Yes. Central University of Punjab is a central government institution under the Ministry of Education, and its territorial jurisdiction covers the state of Punjab, but admissions are open to students from across India and to international students. In the 2024-25 session, CUP's student body included students from 28 states and 7 union territories, as well as international students from over 15 countries including Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Kenya, South Africa, Uganda, and Yemen. There is no domicile restriction for any PG programme at CUP. Admission is purely merit-based on qualifying examination percentage and, where applicable, GATE or GPAT scores.
