NEET UG 2022: For the first time since the inception of NEET UG 2022 examination, the number of applications registered has breached the 18-lakh mark. In addition to this, this year noted 2.57 lakh more registrations than 2021. Again, recording another first, the number of registrations by female candidates is higher than male candidates by nearly 2.6 lakh and the female candidates alone account for over 10 lakh registrations.
In the last five years, from 2017 to 2022, the number of female applicants has gone up by almost 41%. The overall registrations have shot up by over 7 lakh from 2017 to 2022. The registrations for 2017 stopped at 11.4 lakh while for NEET UG 2022, registrations reached 18.7 lakh, the highest yet. Although the rise in the number of registrations suggests the ever-increasing popularity of the exam, it also implies the ever-increasing competition. The cutoffs this year, thus, are expected to be higher.
Another observation over the past five years witnessed a 274.3% increase in the registrations with the 12 Indian languages as the choice of medium. In 2022, as many as 2.5 lakh candidates have opted for Hindi as their language of preference, followed by 50k in Gujarati, 42k in Bengali, and 31.8k in Tamil.
The highest number of registrations this year were seen from Maharashtra state with as many as 2.55 lakh candidates, followed shortly by Uttar Pradesh at 2.18 lakh. Other states with highest registrations are Tamil Nadu at 1.42 lakh, Rajasthan at 1.40 lakh, Karnataka at 1.33 lakh, and Kerala at 1.29 lakh. In fact, 55% of the total registrations in the country are from these six states.
