Character is shaped by values, which are shaped by rituals, symbols and stories.
In SOIL, we have rituals such as ‘Morning Circle’ of Prayers and Sharing, celebrating birthdays by appreciating each person for his/her uniqueness and a regular practice of encouraging dialogue that discovers each other’s’ positives and expressing gratitude.
We also have symbols such as round tables in classrooms in where teachers act as ‘facilitators’, walls made of glass to bring in natural light and enable ‘transparency’, a board in the reception area on which all visitors’ names are displayed to ‘welcome’ them and ‘Rangoli’ as an art made by students and staff to observe all major festivals.
We regularly hold sessions to share stories about what are the source of happiness in our lives, what enabled us to do our ‘joyful best’, what are the high points of our learning and examples of the five pillars of SOIL in action etc.
We involve industry and our Consortium members in designing, renewing and updating our curriculum.
Our students work on a ‘Social Innovation Program’ one day in a week throughout the year where they work in teams to assist NGOs in furthering their work in areas such as literacy, health, child development and environment care among others. This helps them to apply the theoretical concepts, work in teams and learn what it takes to be innovative.
Similarly, students undertake a month long internship in business organizations of repute to get real life practical experience.
In addition, they work in teams on ‘live consulting projects’ to assist startups and MSMEs’ in solving specific problems as part of the course on ‘staff consulting skills’ in the last quarter of their stay at SOIL to hone industry ready skills.
These real life experiences are supplemented by course in “Whole Systems Thinking”, “Strategic Decision Making”, “Critical Thinking and Problem Solving”, “Design Thinking and Innovation” etc. to deepen their competence.
A unique feature of learning at SOIL is a course on ‘Self Leadership’. This enables every student to explore how they could lead their physical, emotional and intellectual selves so as to give off their best. They also learn to be led by their ‘spiritual selves’ so as to lead lives of happiness and wellbeing. An important part of this journey is their identifying their ‘purpose and calling’, discovering their ‘gifts and strengths’ and learning to leverage their positives so as to move towards what matters most to them.
The Yoga and wellness classes, the week-long trip to the Spiritual Retreat in the Himalayas, the weekly classes on Indian Wisdom and the many interactions with spiritual masters throughout the year assist students in this wonderful journey of discovering enthusiasm.
