Academic Requirements

There are no minimum academic requirements for entry.

English Language Requirements

All applicants must have a level of English sufficient to undertake this programme, which is taught and assessed in English.  Those students whose first language is not English should have an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) overall academic score of at least 6.0 (with no band lower than 5.5), issued within the last two years, or equivalent. 

Other requirements

Prior to attending the FFT511 and SSC511 courses, applicants must provide:

  • a medical certificate or other acceptable medical certificate, not more than two years old at the time of attending the FFT511 Advanced Fire Fighting Course, and the SSC511 Proficiency in Survival Craft course.

Recommended that applicants should be aware that they should meet the full MNZ seatime, medical, and eyesight requirements prior to commencing this programme. Applicants should refer to www.maritimenz.govt.nz website for the MNZ licences which this programme contributes towards.

Recommended that prior to the commencement of the programme applicants provide a completed approved Marine Engineer’s training record book which will have been completed at sea.

Eligibility

Applicants under 20 years

  • A minimum of 40 credits at NCEA level 2 across four subjects including a minimum of 12 credits at NCEA level 2 in English (or equivalent).

Applicants 20 years and over

  • No minimum academic requirements.
