In 1983, the State Legislature Act created the Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences, which bears his name. It was established by the state of Uttar Pradesh as a centre of excellence for top-notch medical treatment, instruction, and research. The institute is located at Raebareli Road, 15 kilometres from the centre of the city, on a complex that spans 550 acres (2.2 square kilometres).
Both medical and non-medical professions can receive postgraduate training at Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences.
