History, Affiliations & Rankings

Founded by Alexander Morris, in 1877, University of Manitoba is the first university of western Canada. In 1882, the Manitoba Medical College, founded by physicians and surgeons, became a part of the University. The first school of architecture in western Canada was founded in 1919 at the University of Manitoba.Different programs are accredited by different bodies. Food Science, B.Sc. is accredited by the Institute for Food Technologists (IFT). Architecture, M.Arch. is accredited by Canadian Architectural Certification Board (CACB), City Planning, M.C.P. is accredited by Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP). Other courses are accredited by Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB International), Society of Actuaries (SOA), Centre of Actuarial Excellence (CAE), Canadian Institute of Actuaries (CIA), Co-operative Education and Work-Integrated Learning Canada (CEWIL), Chartered Professionals in Human Resources (CPHR), Commission on Dental Accreditation of Canada (CDAC), Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools (CACMS) and many more. Times Higher Education ranks the university at 351400th in its World University Rankings 2020. Placed among universities with a very high research output by the QS ranking, the university is placed at #601-650 in the Global World Ranking 2020.

Infrastructure, Campus & Courses

The 676 acres urban campus is located in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Its main campus is located in the Fort Garry neighbourhood of southern Winnipeg with other campuses throughout the city.The main Fort Garry campus comprises over 60 teaching and research buildings of the University. Among these buildings, 33 are used for teaching, of which 4 are colleges. The university offers more than 100 courses, 40 of which are undergraduate. Most academic units offer graduate studies programs leading to master's or doctoral degrees. The university has eight faculties which are Arts, Science, Law, Medicine, Engineering, Architecture, Pharmacy, and Agriculture.

Accomplishments & Alumni

In 200708, the University acquired more than CA$150 million in research income. The University holds 48 Canada Research Chairs and is either home to or a partner in 37 different research centres, institutes, and shared facilities. The U of M is the network leader of Intelligent Sensing for Innovative Structures (ISIS) Canada, headquartered at the Faculty of Engineering.Constantine of Irinoupolis, American Orthodox hierarch, Primate of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA - St. Andrew's College 1959. The 39th Mayor of Winnipeg William "Bill" Norrie, cosmologist Phillip James Edwin Peebles OM FRS, contemporary artist Marcel Dzama, Canadian physicist and chemist Louis Alexander Slotin, pioneers of the artificial pacemaker John Alexander "Jack" Hopps are some of the celebrated alumni of University of Manitoba.
