About Utkal University

Utkal University is ranked 93rd in among the top universities under NIRF ranking 2023 with a score of 43.45. The National Board of Examinations (NBE) has opened the NEET PG 2023 correction window and it can be accessed at nbe.edu.in. 

Utkal University has a long history. On 13th June 1943, Utkal University Bill was passed by the Odisha Legislative Assembly by Pandit Godavarish Mishra, the then Minister of Education. In 1950 the territorial jurisdiction of the university was not specified in the year 1950, so territorial jurisdiction was defined as including the whole Odisha State. The university has several departments and has taken charge of several constituent institutions. 

At the present University of Utkal is working with 27 post-graduate teaching and research departments on campus. It has offered 15 sponsored courses, three UGC Sponsored innovative programs, and three constituent institutions, the Directorate of Distance and Continuing Education, University Law College at Vani Vihar, and M.S. Law College at Cuttack.

The PG Departments of Utkal have acquired Departmental Research Support status by UGC. The institute runs more than 200 affiliated colleges in different streams such as Humanities, Social Science, Commerce and Management, etc. The Utkal University is in jurisdiction over nine districts, including Angul, Cuttack, Dhenkanal, Jaipur, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Khurda, Nayagarh, and Puri.

Utkal University Courses and Admission 2024

The admission procedure of Utkal University for all the courses is based on the Entrance examination. As per the admission analytics, the number of applications received online is 126. The details of applications for admission to the vacant seats in the several sponsored programme for the years 2021-2022 are available on the university website. Students interested in joining Utkal University courses are first requested to register themselves through the E-admission process for online application. 

The applications will be invited through the admission portal of Utkal. Students can also submit the application form directly to the institution Utkal University Bhubaneshwar admission follows the usual admission pattern. 

The admission to B. Pharm and M. Pharm courses is based on the Odisha Joint Entrance Examination, whereas the admission to MBA is based on CAT/MAT eligibility test. For the M. Phil programme, scores obtained from UGC NET/ JRF are mandatory. Admission to other UG-related courses is on the basis entrance exam conducted as a part of the Utkal admission process. The institute also offers distance education programmes. 

The admission at Utkal University is similar to other universities. Students have to qualify for the entrance exam with a valid score. Those who qualify in the entrance exam are called for counselling sessions. Students need to confirm their rank based on the merit list and decide on the course before appearing in Utkal counselling, based on the merit, the candidate will be offered seats to the desired course. To get Utkal University admission, students need to put their 100% effort into qualifying entrance exams and interview rounds. For certain courses, an entrance examination is not required, students will get direct  Utkal admission. Utkal University Application Process 2024 

The Utkal University, Bhubaneshwar, application procedure starts in April. The application form will be available online. Candidates are requested to check the eligibility criteria. Those who fit the bill can apply the following procedure.

  • The candidate interested in opting into the courses is requested to visit the University's official website. At first, the candidate needs to register by clicking the register button and providing the required details.
  • In the second step of the Utkal University, the application process candidate needs to pay the application fee, which varies concerning the course. The fee is Rs 600/- for self-financing courses, which can be paid online using various channels such as credit cards, Debit cards, Net banking, etc. The application fee details for the other courses will be informed by the invitation.  
  • Candidates need to download the Utkal University application form, take the print-out copy, and fill in their details such as Name, previous course details, etc. Candidates need to attach the required documents for verification. Utkal University Campus Facilities and Infrastructure

The environment of a campus contributes to it on a wide scale. Utkal University's infrastructure is also one of the factors based on which parents and students analyze an education institution. The Utkal University Campus offers a rich pleasant atmosphere where every student gets a home-like feeling. The Utkal Campus is widely spread around an area of 399.9 acres. The architecture and modern building structure are one of the highlights of the campus.

It consists of 40 blocks, out of which 26 are assigned for teaching. The remaining are utilized as an administrative block, a health centre, a guest house, an auditorium, an indoor stadium, and hostels.

The University has taken special care to develop students' learning practices. Thus, a separate library is built with six floors that cover 30,000 sq. ft inside the campus. The campus offers everything essential for the overall growth of student's development. Hostel: The Utkal Bhubaneshwar Hostel is well-maintained, clean, and spacious, with several facilities. Inside the campus premise, there are 13 hostels, of which 6 are allotted for gents and seven for ladies. The hostel consists of a common room with borders provided with a computer, wifi, Library, Newspaper, Television, and periodicals facility. Girls interested in fitness can avail for Gym available inside the ladies' hostels. Gardens are another visual treat in the morning available at the hostel premise.

 Electric Water purifiers are available in every hostel for a clean and safe water drinking experience. The security of the students is given utmost care. Thus, all the hostels are supervised by the superintendent, Assistant superintendent and coordinated by the hostel warden. A residence committee has been appointed to take care of the matters relating to general policy, administration, and hostels from time to time. The committee consists of Warden, Chairperson, PG Council, all the Superintendents, and Assistant Superintendents.

Guest House: The Utkal Guest House plays the host to the number of guests attending the campus for several workshops and conferences. It comprises a well-furnished room with single and double beds, a catering service, and a large banquet hall used for lunch and dinner for the participants of the events. A spacious parking facility and lush green garden with seasonal flowers are other facilities that tend the visitors to stay in the University guest house.

Library: The Utkal Library offers a vibrant and welcoming learning space to all the faculties, students, research scholars, and employees of the University. The library is named Parija Library in remembrance of Pranakrushna Parija, first vice-chancellor and professor. The library is extended over 28,000 square feet comprising a large reading room, periodical, reference, manuscript, documentation, text-book, and administrative sections. 

It consists of more than two hundred thousand books and 5800 rare manuscripts. As a part of UGC INFONET Digital Library Consortium INFLIBNET, it provides access to e-resources and serves the need of a large number of readers. 

Canteen: Canteen is where students spend most of their time; thus, special attention is given to cleanliness and Hygiene. Snacks, cold drinks, Tea, Coffee, Breakfast, and Mid-time lunch are all available to the students. During the examination time canteen acts as a great relief to the students for group studies.

Auditorium: The University has a spacious auditorium that can contain many students. Several seminars, conferences, workshops, and cultural fest are held in this auditorium. 

Health Centre: A health centre is available at the campus of Utkal University, Bhubaneshwar. Qualified medical officers with good infrastructure are provided. It offers services to students, faculty, staff, family members, and residents of the university quarters. Medical officers are available 24*7 in case of emergency. 

Sports Council: Extra-curricular activities are as important as academics. Thus, the sports council is working proactively to support students interested in sports and games. The main objective while appointing this council was to promote the interest of young talents, select those candidates who have that potential and train them to reach their goals, Coordinate activities with other universities and colleges,

 To look after the active participation in tournaments, Inter-University Tournament is organized at the state and national levels. Computer Centre: In1971, an IBM 1130 computer was contributed to the infrastructure of Utkal University, which lead to the establishment of the computer centre of the University. It is used to meet the academic needs of all over the state as well as for non-academic purposes by Orissa State Electricity Board, FCI Talcher Heavy Water Project, Rourkela Steel Plant, etc. 

The activities of the Computer Centre include:

1. Preparation of Monthly salary, Pension, and Family pension for this University's employees.

2. Providing training to teaching faculties and non-teaching staff.

3. To guide the students in the usage of computers.

4. Maintenance and calculation of G.P.F account to the staff of the University.

Utkal University Curriculum

An effective curriculum acts as a road map for delivering quality education. Utkal Curriculum follows a semester-wise course structure where each student will be allotted a grade based on their performance in the semester exams. The number of semesters in each course may vary depending on the duration of the course. Semester exams include both theory and practical examinations in respective subjects. Other than semester exams, model tests, assessment tests, and class tests are conducted to understand students' progression. 

 The teaching methods at Utkal University curriculum include Lecture, Demonstration and Discussion, Seminar, Workshop, Conference, Skill training, Field visits, Research projects, etc

Events and Clubs at Utkal University

The institute is proud to say that it has acted as an incubator for several talents who have established themselves at national and international levels. At Utkal Annual day, students from regular departments and the self-financing programme come together and take the initiative to make this celebration a grand success. 

Students at the Utkal University handle events themselves under the guidance of concerned faculty members. Other events at Utkal which are celebrated with great interest are Utkal divas, the Foundation day of the state, and Nuakhai, a major festival in which the first agricultural product is offered to the ruling deity.

Utkal University clubs are functioning, intending to be strong support for the required students. Natural Service Scheme, Student Grievance Cell Social Services Guild, Director, Student's Welfare, Sports Council, Cultural Club, and Utkal University Placement Cell are some of the Utkal clubs. The function of each club is mentioned below.

1. Natural Service Scheme

This club functions with the motto of expanding students' personalities through various community services. This will help them to understand their responsibility towards the community and society. It will enhance the confidence level and utilization of knowledge to find the solution to real-life problems.

2. Director, Student’s Welfare

It is an important wing of the University administration's work to support the students' financial needs and academic pursuits. It acts as a bridge between students, universities, and various funding agencies to avail of the fellowship and scholarship. It encourages students to showcase their hidden talents in the competition organized by the committee and rewards them with gold medals and cash prizes as a token of appreciation. 

3. Student Grievance Cell

Students Grievance Cell of Utkal University takes care of the student’s problems. Students facing any trouble in academics or other affairs can approach the cell.
