BTech Course Overview

BTech is a four-year highly demanded undergraduate engineering course offering rewarding prospects to students. The full form of BTech is Bachelor of Technology. There are more than 4,500 leading engineering colleges in India. Out of these, around 3,601 colleges are privately owned, while 707 colleges are under public/government ownership, and the remaining 53 colleges are owned by public-private entities. Over the last few years have seen a consistent growth of approximately 5% in BTech courses in India. The National Board of Accreditation (NBA) accredits numerous BTech courses, guaranteeing top-notch curriculum and teaching quality. BTech Admission Process in India 2024

Usually, 70% of seats are filled through exams and 30% through management quota but this might also differ for different colleges. Candidates who want to enroll in a BTech course need to follow the stages mentioned below.

  1. For admission to BTech courses, it is mandatory for a candidate to appear for an entrance exam. Some of the national-level entrance exams are JEE Main for NITs, IIITs, GFTIs, and some private colleges. 
  2. To get admission to IITs, candidates have to appear for JEE Advanced.
  3. Other state-level entrance exams such as WBJEE, KEAM, AP EAMCET, TS EAMCET, and MHT CET and university-level exams such as BITSAT, VITEEE, SRMJEEE are usually chosen by the candidates based on the choice of the college.
  4. The BTech entrance exams usually occur every year in April, May, and June.
  5. After the conclusion of the exams, the authorities conduct the counselling and seat allotment procedures. Candidates can select their chosen college based on the rank acquired by them and the availability of seats.
  6. After the admission formalities are done, candidates will have to report to their respective colleges by paying the prescribed BTech fees.

BTech Lateral Entry Procedure

BTech Lateral Entry is for candidates who have already completed their Diploma in Engineering or a B.Sc degree. Therefore, candidates will get direct entry in the third semester of the BTech, requiring the candidate to appear in an entrance-based procedure. For entrance to B Tech Lateral Entry Courses, candidates must complete their B.Sc or Diploma degree in engineering with a minimum of 45% aggregate where a relaxation of 5% is given to the candidates belonging from the reserved category. Some of the BTech Lateral Entry entrances are Haryana LEET, Assam JLEE, JELET, PU LEET, etc.

BTech Eligibility Criteria

Candidates who wish to pursue BTech are advised to check the BTech eligibility criteria before filling out the BTech application form so that they do not miss out on anything and regret it at the last minute. The eligibility criteria for BTech may vary from institute to institute and have been discussed below.

  • Candidate should have completed 10+2 or equivalent examinations from a recognized board like CBSE, ICSE, etc.
  • They must belong to the science stream with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM) as compulsory subjects.

Direct BTech Admission Process Without Entrance Examinations

Candidates who do not wish to appear for any exam but pursue a BTech can be admitted to their desired institutions through a direct entry procedure. Access to direct BTech universities can be done through Management Quota, NRI Quota, Lateral Entry, and Institute-Specific Criteria. 

  • Management Quota: Some private engineering colleges like Delhi Technical Campus (DTC), Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology, etc. have a special quota called the Management Quota, which allows for direct entry to their courses. For admission to colleges through management quota, candidates have to identify colleges offering management quota seats and check eligibility criteria. Apply directly to the college through their official website or admission office and submit the required documents. Candidates have to pay a higher tuition fee or donation as per the college's management quota policy only then they will receive admission confirmation and complete enrollment formalities.
  • Lateral Entry: If you have a diploma in engineering or a related field, you may be eligible for lateral entry directly into the second year of the BTech program. Some of the colleges offering lateral entry direct admission are Adamas University and NMIMS.

Types of BTech Courses

B Tech is an undergraduate degree course within which there are many specializations from which candidates can choose available full-time BTech, part-time BTech, online BTech, offline BTech, and distant BTech.
