Hotel Management Vs Tourism and Travel Management: Courses, Eligibility, Colleges, Fees, Scope, Salary

Hotel Management and Travel and Tourism Management are frequently confused, but they are two distinct streams within the hospitality course sector. So, what's the connection between hospitality and tourism? What exactly is travel tourism? It is also true that hospitality and tourism are inextricably linked. Tourism services are provided by the hospitality industry. Both, however, target a different segment of the Indian hospitality industry. Students are frequently perplexed about whether to pursue a Hotel Management or a Travel and Tourism course due to a lack of information and clarity. Hotel management and tourism are two of the most important and potentially lucrative sectors in India for higher education. The primary distinction between hotel management and tourism management is that hotel management focuses on all aspects of operations such as hotels, restaurants, cruise ships, amusement parks, country clubs, and convention centres, whereas tourism management focuses on tourism development, travel industry management, tourism marketing, and tourism services. Admission to the top IHMs is based on a national level entrance exam, the NCHM JEE. Let us look more closely at the distinction between hotel management and travel and tourism management.

India is a country full of beautiful natural sights, astounding monuments, bustling bazaars, spicy and lip-smacking food and simple, friendly people. It is a country where proper hospitality and care of guests has been defined as one of the most important responsibilities of any host. The surprising variety of climate, culture, colours and landscape in India make travelling in the country an interesting experience not only for a foreign tourist but also for her own citizens. Which is why tourism is one of the most important and potentially rewarding sectors for India.

As per the India Tourism Statistics 2019, which are published by the Ministry of Tourism, more than 10.5 million foreign tourists visited India in 2018. The estimated earnings from these tourists were upwards of US $25.5 billion (more than Rs. 1,90,000 cr). And still, there is a high scope and expectations for the growth and development of tourism in India.

This is why hospitality and tourism is one of the most popular sectors of higher education in the country. Students have the option to choose from a number of hospitality and tourism courses after class 12th. The number of hotel management colleges in India is also quite high. Plus, a large number of Institutes of Hotel Management (IHMs) have been established in the country under the direct purview of the National Council for Hotel Management and Catering Technology (NCHMCT) to increase the quality of research as well as the existing course curriculum in the field of hospitality and hotel management in India.

Hotel Management Vs Travel and Tourism Management - Overview

Hotel Management and Tourism and Travel Management are often placed under the same category of courses. Due to a lack of information and clarity, students are often left confused about whether they should opt for a Hotel Management course or a Travel and Tourism course. While both Hotel Management and Tourism and Travel Management courses are related to the hospitality stream, both target a different niche of the hospitality sector in India.

Basically, choosing between a Hotel Management vs Tourism and Travel Management depends on which sector of the hospitality industry a candidate wishes to work in. So, choosing the correct hospitality and tourism course after 12th has the potential to define a candidate's career in the hospitality industry. This is why it becomes very important for a candidate aspiring to pursue hospitality education in India to understand the basic difference between Hotel Management and Tourism and Travel Management courses.

Hotel Management vs Travel and Tourism Management: Summary

Hotel Management or Hospitality Management courses prepare a student for the hospitality industry such as handling operations and other work in hotels, resorts, restaurants, cruise ships, clubs, convention centres such as marriage halls etc.

On the other hand, the course of Travel and Tourism Management is more apt for a person who wishes to join the tourism sector. This includes travel and tour companies, tourism marketing industry, national and international monuments, wildlife parks etc.
