NIFT 2018 Exam Analysis

NIFT 2018 Entrance Exam was conducted on 21st of January, 2018 (Sunday) at various centres across the country. The NIFT entrance exam is held in order to shortlist candidates for admission to NIFT's design programmes. The National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), which is considered to be a pioneer in fashion education, has its main campus in New Delhi. Other campuses are located in Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Gandhinagar, Hyderabad, Jodhpur, Kangra, Kannur, Patna, Shillong and Raebareli.

NIFT GAT Paper Analysis 2018

The GAT paper in NIFT entrance exam did not throw any surprises and students were able to complete the paper in the stipulated time. The question paper pattern and the type of questions asked in the examination were on the same lines as previous years’ papers. Students found English, Math and Mental Ability quite doable as the questions were pretty straightforward. On the contrary, the difficulty level Reading Comprehension passages turned out to be moderate. RC was also a bit lengthy and time-consuming, according to students who attempted the paper. Those who would have attempted RC after other sections would have been at an advantage. The questions asked in General Knowledge and Fashion Aptitude questions section were quite tricky. According to some students, the questions were difficult in terms of depth of topics and were based on company branding and advertising. Some of the questions were based on major fashion events and fairs.

NIFT CAT Paper Analysis 2018

In the CAT paper, candidates had to attempt 3 questions. Each question was followed by choices. While the first two questions were of 40 marks each. The third question was of 20 marks. The first question was based on instructional design, where students were required to draw the steps involved to change a bulb or make a paper boat. The second question required the candidates to design a bag either for a marriage, a picnic or for shopping. The third question tested students' fundamentals in graphic design. It asked the students to depict their personality with basic geometric shapes.

Overall, we can say that those who would've practiced previous years' papers would have done well in the NIFT Entrance Exam 2018 as the exam was pretty straightforward.

If you one of those who appeared for the NIFT entrance exam, then this is where you will find all the necessary information related to NIFT and other important steps that you must take post the entrance exam.

NIFT Exam Analysis 2017

NIFT Entrance Exam 2017 was held on February 12, 2017, across 32 test cities in India. As part of NIFT admission process, candidates have to first clear a written entrance test. Students who wish to pursue B.Des and M.Des programmes have to take both, Creative Ability Test (CAT) and General Ability Test (GAT). On the contrary, candidates seeking admission in BFTech, MFTech and MFM courses at NIFT, have to appear for only GAT. Basis the written exam, candidates are selected for further rounds including Situation Test and Interview round. As per the analysis of NIFT entrance exam 2017, all the sections in the paper had some tough questions. Therefore, the overall difficulty level was slightly higher as compared to previous years. The difficulty level of the first sitting of Creative Ability Test (CAT) was higher as compared to last year. In the NIFT Question Paper 2017, the CAT paper had three questions along with three choices. The focus of this part of the examination was to test candidates' drawing abilities, drawing and creative visualisation, sense of perspective and rendering abilities.

The General Ability Test (GAT) had some changes in its pattern in terms of the number of questions. The total number of questions was reduced to 100 for B.Des & 120 for M.Des. The same had to be attempted within the duration of 2 hours. As far as the difficulty level of the paper is concerned, the examination turned out to be moderate. The GAT paper was designed keeping in mind the qualifying exam curriculum and candidates' approach to the exam.

NIFT Exam Analysis 2016

The 2016 NIFT written entrance examination was held on February 14th for Bachelor of Design, M.Des and Bachelor of Fashion Technology. The aim of the test was to test candidates' colour sensibilities and aesthetics while also testing them on their product designing skills.

Based on the choice, all eligible candidates had to appear in a written entrance examination at the Examination Centres opted by them. The written entrance examination is designed to test the knowledge, skill and aptitude of the candidates for the programme opted. There is no negative marking.

On the basis of the result of written test GAT and CAT, shortlisted B.Des candidates are called for the second test called Situation Test. On the basis of the result of GAT and CAT, in the case of M.Des and GAT in the case of M.F Tech and MFM, candidates are called for Group Discussion/Personal Interview (GD/PI).

Creative Ability Test (CAT) Analysis

This test is administered to judge the intuitive ability, power of observation in concept development and design ability of the candidate. An important aspect of the test is the creative and innovative use of colour and illustration skills.

The Creative Ability Test (CAT) had three questions to be attempted.

The first question was based on colour sensibilities: The students had a choice of four themes from which they were required to attempt any two. They were to show the progression from one to another only through colours which were to be filled in a series of 10 blocks. The choices were (a) Cocoon to butterfly (b) Dawn to Night (c) Spring to autumn and (d) Shiny metallic to Rust. The visible changes were to be shown that occur in each process only through the expression of colours. This was a 30 marks question.

The second question provided the students with 4 set of choices in which they had to attempt any two. This question again was to test the psychological and emotional connect of the students with colours based on his or her colour interpretation. This had to be done in the format provided which comprised of seven concentric circles. The themes were (a) Sorrow (b) Happiness (c) Rebellious (d) Astonishment. It was a 30 marks question,

In the third question was of 40 marks and the students were specifically instructed NOT to colour or shade. In this question, students had to design 4 products, giving as much three dimensional details as possible, they had to make their designs on any one of the shapes out of triangle, square, circle and rectangle. All the four products were to be designed from the one shape chosen. The categories asked were (a) A textile print (b) A footwear product (c) A table utility product (d) A clothing utility product.

The NIFT CAT 2016 was similar for both Bachelor's & Master's in Design course admissions.

General Ability Test (GAT) Analysis

1) Quantitative Ability: This sub-test was to test the quantitative ability of the candidates. The subtest consisted of questions on Addition, Multiplication, Division, Fractions, Percentage, Rate of Interest, Work and Task, Ratio and Proportion, and Distance.

2) Communication Ability and English Comprehension: This was to test the language ability of the candidates in day to day communication in English. It includes questions on synonyms, antonyms, words with corresponding meanings, singular, plural, one-word substitutes, idioms and phrases, correct spellings, comprehending a situation from a given passage etc.

3) Analytical Ability and Logical Ability: This was designed to test the candidate’s capacity for inference and logic from the given information and to evaluate the candidate’s ability to identify a given problem and apply reasoning in solving the core issues of the problem. Concepts and practice of creative and lateral thinking are likely to be useful.

4) General Knowledge and Current Affairs: This was designed to test the candidate’s general knowledge and current affairs.

5) Case Study: This was based on a situation of an industry environment. It helps to evaluate the candidate’s managerial ability.

The comprehension was on the tougher side of all sections and saw eight passages of moderate length but the language was fairly comprehensible. Reasoning and English language were on the expected line. This year the business awareness questions dominated the general knowledge section as such with questions from advertisements regarding company names, products, brand ambassadors, taglines etc. Questions on personalities were also there.

Creative Ability Test (CAT) appeared more comfortable to the aspirants as compared to GAT. As the relative weightage of CAT and GAT from one course to other, a permutation and combination of the scores in these two sections will be at work while getting a call for the next level.

How to Prepare for NIFT 2019 Entrance Exam

The NIFT 2019 entrance exam is going to be conducted in the third week of January 2019. Students preparing for the exam must be getting anxious as qualifying in the NIFT entrance exam is extremely crucial for admission to UG and PG courses offered at various campuses of the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT). Based on their performance in the NIFT entrance exam, candidates can get admission in programmes such as Bachelor of Design, Bachelor of Fashion Technology, Master of Design, Master of Fashion Management and Master of Fashion Technology.

We have compiled some tips and tricks that candidates may use to keep anxiety at bay and focus on boosting their performance in the exam.

Keep Stress Away – You must avoid taking too much stress. Anxiety not only hampers your preparation but also negatively impacts your performance on the exam day. Stress may not be completely unavoidable during this time but you must try and stay positive to keep yourself calm and relaxed.

Have a Proper Plan – When you're beginning your journey of preparing for a competitive exam, the first and foremost thing to do is to create a plan that you can follow religiously. Having a schedule means you can always incorporate short breaks to rejuvenate and come back to study with full concentration.

Get Your Basics Right – Knowing things on the surface is not enough when you're preparing for an entrance exam. You should have in-depth knowledge and understanding of each topic that you cover. Learning formulas may help in some case but competitive exams are more about logic and your understanding at the fundamental level.

Keep Short Notes Handy for Revision – During revision, it is not possible to go through all the topics in detail. Hence, it makes sense to prepare short notes covering all the important points. It improves your chances of performing well in the exam to a great extent.

Get Expert Guidance – When you're preparing for an entrance exam, you will probably have some doubts related to the syllabus, exam pattern or the test day. In that case, it is best to have a mentor on your side who will not only clear your confusion but will also boost your confidence to take the exam.
