Q - What is National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test for Postgraduates?

NEET-MD/MS/Diploma (NEET-PG ) 2018

NEET-PG is an eligibility-cum-ranking examination prescribed as the single entrance examination to various MD/MS and PG Diploma Courses as per Section (10) of Indian Medical Council Act 1956.NEET-PG is a single window entrance examination for PG courses. No otherentrance examination, either at state or institution level, shall be valid for entry to MD/MS/PG Diploma Courses as per the Indian Medical Council Act, 1956 w.e.f. 2017 admission session.

SCOPE OF NEET-PG  

NEET-PG 2017 shall be a single eligibility cum entrance examination namely ‘National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test for admission to Postgraduate Medical Courses’ for the academic session 2017 which will include the following:

  1. All India 50% quota seats for MD/MS/PG Diploma courses (all states except Andhra Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir and Telangana)
  2. State quota seats for MD/MS/PG Diploma courses for all States/Union territories of India (including the states of Andhra Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir and Telangana)
  3. MD/MS/PG Diploma courses at all Private Medical Colleges, Institutions & Universities/Deemed Universities all across the country
  4. MD/MS/PG Diploma courses at Armed Forces Medical Services Institutions.
  5. DNB Broad specialty courses (January 2017 Admission Session)

The following Medical institutions are not covered by centralized admissions for MD/MS seats through NEET-PG for 2017 session:

  1. AIIMS, New Delhi
  2. PGIMER, Chandigarh
  3. SGPGIMS, Lucknow
  4. JIPMER, Puducherry
  5. NIMHANS, Bengaluru

National Board of Examinations (NBE) conducted National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test- MD/MS/Diploma (NEET-PG ), 2017.National Board of Examinations (NBE) is an autonomous body under the Ministry of Health, Government of India, and established in 1975 at New Delhi to standardizing postgraduate medical education and examination in India.The postgraduate degree awarded by the National Board of Examinations is called the Diplomate of National Board (DNB). The list of recognized qualifications awarded by the Board in various specialties and super-specialties are approved by the Government of India and are included in the First Schedule of Indian Medical Council Act, 1956.

1) What is National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test for Postgraduates?

NEET-PG is an eligibility-cum-ranking examination prescribed as the single entrance examination to various MD/MS and PG Diploma Courses as per Section (10) of Indian Medical Council Act, 1956. No other entrance examination, either at state or institution level, shall be valid for entry to MD/MS/PG Diploma Courses w.e.f. Admission Session .

2) Is NEET-PG a mandatory test?

Yes, the NEET-PG is a mandatory test for gaining admission to any Postgraduate Medical Courses w.e.f. admission session.

3) Who will be conducting NEET-PG ?

National Board of Examinations (NBE) will be conducting the NEET-PG.

4) What is the testing format for NEET-PG 2017 ?

National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test for Post graduates (NEET-PG) shall be conducted on computer-based test (CBT) platform. This is not an Internet-based test, i.e. a candidate does not take the test over the Internet. Instead of reading the questions from a paper booklet and darkening the ovals in an answer sheet, a candidate will now read the questions on a computer screen and choose an answer by using a mouse to click on the appropriate option.

5) How is the computer-based format different from the paper and pencil format?

The only difference is in the way the questions are presented, and how responsesare recorded.

6) How do I apply for the exam?

Candidates may register for their test online NEET-PG Official website  from 26th September to 31st October .

7) What does a computer-based test look like?

Demo exam will be made available on the NEET-PG website to provide candidates with the look and feel, as well as functionality of the actual test.

8) What is the Demo Test?

The Demo test is a sample of computer-based exam that is intended to familiarise candidates with the navigation and functionality of the NEET-PG. It includes a tutorial on using the various features of the exam like moving between screens, selecting, de-selecting, marking and reviewing responses etc., as well as some sample questions which will allow candidates to try out these features. Note that these sample questions are not representative of the content or difficulty level of the actual exam.

9) Can I take the exam from any computer?

No, a candidate will have to test take the exam on a pre-assigned workstation, in the testing venue chosen by him/her during the time of registration.

10) Can I use my friend’s email address when registering for NEET-PG?

No, you need to use a valid and unique email address.

11) Is there a restriction on what can be entered within the address fields during the online registration?

Yes, you need to limit each address line to 30 characters including spaces. You may make use of Address line 1, 2 and 3 in case of longer addresses. Special characters are acceptable.

12) Can I reschedule my exam date / time?

No, you will not be allowed to change your test location, time or date once you have completed your online registration and scheduling process. Please select your preferred choices carefully based on the availability shown to you at the time of your scheduling.

13) Can I cancel the exam?

No, under no circumstances will a cancellation / refund be allowed.

14) If I do not take my exam, will I be eligible for a refund?

No, your fees will not be refunded in case you do not appear for your exam as per your allotted location, date and time.

15) What happens after I’ve submitted my online application?

At the end of Registration and Scheduling process the applicant will get a computer generated acknowledgement, this acknowledgment shall also be sent at the registered e-mail ID of the applicant.  A print out of this acknowledgment constitutes the ADMIT CARD-CUM-CONFIRMATION SLIP. Candidate is required to print a copy of admit card and affix a latest passport size photograph. Candidates may also log on to the NEET-PG website to download and print a copy of their Application form. The Admit Card will specify the Application Number / Testing ID of the Candidate.

16) Can I appear for NEET-PG more than once during the testing window?

No, you can only appear for NEET-PG only once during the testing window (5th Dec – 13th Dec ). It will be deemed a fraudulent activity if one attempts to appear more than once. Admit Cards and photo IDs of the candidates will be checked, and digital images and fingerprints will be captured at the test centre.

17) If I have made any mistake(s) while registering for NEET-PG, can I make changes later to rectify?

If you make mistakes while entering your application data, you may log back in to the NEET-PG registration website via www.nbe.edu.in and select “Edit Profile” to make changes to your personal details such as address or “Edit Application” to make changes to your application data such as educational information. For security reasons, editing of candidate’s full name and username will not be allowed. The ability to edit application profile and application details will be available until the end of the registration window i.e. until 11:59 PM IST on 31st October .  
Note that if you make any changes to your profile or application details, you will need to print and carry the most recent Admit Card.

18) Does the name appearing on the photo identification need to match with the one shown on the Admit Card?

The name on the photo identification must match the name as shown on the Admit Card. If your name has been changed due to events such as marriage, candidate must show the relevant document mentioned below at the time of the exam:

  • Marriage Certificate
  • Divorce Decree
  • Legal Name Change Document.

19) What happens during the security checks, identity verification and check-in?

Candidates will need to produce their Admit Card and one valid and original ID for verification upon arrival at the test centre. Only registered candidates will be allowed into the test centre. Candidates will be frisked before entering the testing room to ensure they are not carrying any prohibited items. A digital photo and fingerprint of all candidates will also be captured electronically as part of the check-in process.

20) In case I missed registrations during the registration window, can I still register for NEET-PG?

  • No, you can only register for NEET-PG from 26th September to 31st October .  
  • No exceptions will be permitted.

21) If my registration window does not work, who should I contact?

22) What are the timings to contact the NBE Candidate Care helpline?

23) Who is eligible to take the NEET-PG ?

Candidates in possession of MBBS degree/Provisional MBBS Pass Certificate from a Medical College/Institute duly recognized as per the provisions of the Indian Medical Council Act, possessing either a permanent or provisional registration certificate of MBBS or equivalent qualification issued by the Medical Council of India / State Medical Council and have completed one year of internship or are likely to complete the same on or before 31st March 2017 may apply for NEET-PG.

24) What is the duration of the exam?

The exam duration is 3 hours and 30 Minutes and will be conducted in a single section. There will also be an additional 15-minute tutorial prior to the start of the test. Candidates will also need to accept a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) before beginning the exam.

25) How many questions will there be?

There will be a total of 300 questions.

26) Can I move back and forth between the questions?

Yes, candidates will have the option to navigate between the questions via the Review Screen. Candidates are advised to make use of the Demo exam on the NEET-PG website www.nbe.edu.in to familiarize themselves with the navigation and functionality of the actual exam. A 15-minute tutorial will also be available prior to the start of the actual exam.

27) What type of questions will there be?

The exam will only contain multiple choice questions, each with four (4) options and only one (1) correct response.

28) What is the syllabus / course on which the exam would be based?

The syllabus for the exam shall comprise of subjects/knowledge areas as per the Graduate Medical Education Regulations issued by Medical Council of India with prior approval of Government of India. Kindly refer to the MCI website for complete document. The syllabus shall be as per the latest Graduate Medical Education Regulations notified by the Medical Council of India with prior approval of the Govt. of India. 

29) What is the 15-minute tutorial?

The tutorial provides a series of screens that will orient you to the computer based NEET-PG. This will give you an opportunity to try the various features, including how to navigate between questions, review them, select, de-select, change and mark responses etc. The tutorial has a total duration of 15 minutes and candidates are advised to go through it entirely before starting the actual test. At the end of the tutorial, candidates will be asked to accept a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) before beginning the test. For a similar preview, candidates can take a tour of the Demo exam which will be available on NEET-PG website .

30) Will there be any breaks during the exam?

No, there will be no scheduled breaks during the test but candidates are allowed to go to the restroom by raising their hand to inform the test centre administrator. Note that the on-screen timer will continue running during restroom breaks.

31) What will I be provided with during the exam?

At the test centre, each candidate will be seated at a desk with a computer terminal and he/she will be provided with pencils, eraser and rough/scratch paper. Rough work cannot be done on any other paper/sheet, as no other material will be allowed inside the testing room. On completion of the exam, candidates will have to hand all the scratch paper and stationery back to the test centre administrator.

32) How do I know when the exam time has ended?

There will be an on-screen timer on the top right corner of your screen which will count down from 3 hours and 30 minutes. Candidates are advised to check this timer regularly and allocate their time carefully. A pop-up window will appear before the exam ends to alert candidates.

33) Will I be able to leave early if I finish the exam before the allocated exam time has ended?

No, candidates will not be allowed to leave until the entire duration of the exam is up with the exception of genuine medical conditions.

34) What are the types of result of NEET-PG ?

NBE shall be declaring the results for:

  • All India 50% quota seats for MD/MS/PG Diploma Courses (all states except Jammu & Kashmir, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana)
  • State quota seats for MD/MS/PG Diploma Courses of all states/UTs of India ( including the states of Jammu & Kashmir, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana)
  • Admission to MD/MS/PG Diploma Courses in all Private Medical Colleges / Institutions / Universities / Deemed Universities
  • Admission to PG Medical Courses in AFMS Institutions
  • Admission to DNB CET Broad specialty courses(January 2017 session).

35) How will the tie of marks be solved? What is the tie breaking criteria?

In case two or more candidates obtaining equal marks in the competitive entrance examination, their inter se merit will be determined according to age, older will get preference over younger.

36) What is the validity of NEET-PG result?

The validity of the result of NEET-PG shall be only for the current admission session i.e. admission session for MD/MS/PG Diploma courses and cannot be carried forward for the next session of admissions for MD/MS/PG Diploma courses.

37) Who will be eligible for State quota seats counseling?

Candidates who are in possession of MBBS degree / Provisional Pass Certificate recognized as per the provisions of the Indian Medical Council Act 1956 and possess permanent / provisional registration certificate of MBBS qualification issued by the Medical Council of India/ State Medical Council and have completed one year of internship / likely to complete on or before 31st March 2017 and has qualified NEET-PG are eligible for pursuing MD/MS/PG Diploma courses subject to the applicable rules, regulations, reservation policies and guidelines of respective States/UTs. NBE has no role in counseling/allotment of seats.

38) Who will determine the final merit list for State quota seats?

The merit for State quota seats will be determined by concerned State authority using NEET-PG scores and as per applicable Regulation and/or their eligibility criteria, Guidelines, reservation policy, benefits for In-service candidates, rural posting (if applicable) etc.

39) Who will conduct the counseling for State quota seats & Private Medical Colleges/Universities?

Counseling for various categories of State quota seats shall be conducted by the concerned State Medical Directorate/Counseling authority(s) of the State/UT/Private Universities/Medical College/Institutions.

40) Will there be any weightage for in service candidates in State quota seats and how it will be reflected?

Weightage for In-service candidates or rural posting in State quota seats shall be decided by the States/UT themselves as per applicable Regulation and/or their qualifying criteria, and applicable guidelines etc. NBE has no role in counseling/allotment of seats.

41) How many seats shall be available for all States?

Candidates are advised to visit official website for the latest information about various MD/MS/Post Graduate Diploma courses & seats available at various Medical Colleges/Institutions..

42) What are the reservation policies for various categories for State quota seats/Private Medical Colleges/Universities?

NBE shall be providing only the data of candidates and their results without applying the reservation prevalent in the States/Union territories of India/ Private Medical Colleges/Institutes/Universities. The merit list/category wise merit list for the States/UT/ Private Medical Colleges/Institutes/Universities concerned shall be generated by the States/UT/Universities themselves as per applicable Regulation and/or their qualifying criteria, applicable guidelines and reservation policies.

43) Who will conduct the counseling for All India 50% quota seats?

Counseling for All India 50% quota seats shall be conducted by Medical Counseling Committee (MCC) of Director General of Health Services, Government of India. Please refer to MCC website for details.

44) Who will conduct the counseling for DNB Courses?

Centralized merit based Counseling for admission to DNB Courses shall be conducted by NBE using NEET-PG scores.
