How to Prepare for XAT 2017

  • XAT is the second most popular MBA Entrance Test in India. More than 100 MBA institutes, including the XLRI, XIM, XIME, XISS and many other top-rung institutes, use the test score as a primary screening tool for admission to their MBA courses. Most candidates for the CAT also undertake preparation for the XAT as it opens the gates to some of the most reputed MBA institutes in India. 
  • You need to handle your XAT preparation in a planned manner to succeed by getting a good score. Here, we will try to provide you XAT preparation tips for the written part.
  • Successful XAT preparation necessitates that you be familiar with the test and study as per a plan, supplemented by enough XAT practice tests. It would not be easy to quantify the number of hours you require for XAT preparation as people differ in their academic profiles, previous XAT preparation, and subject proficiency. Therefore, it would be impractical to have a one-size-fits-all XAT preparation plan, which suits everyone. Your XAT preparation plan will depend on familiarity, time and learning speed. Actually, how to prepare for XAT is a subjective question as the preparation for XAT has to be customized in each case.

For Paper-1, your XAT preparation requires you to be comfortable with four major test domains: Quantitative Ability, Verbal Ability, Data Interpretation and Decision Making. 

  • Quantitative Ability contains questions on numbers, algebra, geometry, sets, functions, algebraic equations, trigonometry, coordinate geometry, mensuration, probability, profit-loss, simple interest, time-calendar, surds and indices, linear equations, quadrilaterals and polygons, progressions - A.P., G.P., H.P.
  • Verbal Ability contains questions based on Reading Comprehension passages, Sentence Correction, Critical Reasoning, Verbal Analogies, Fill in the Blanks and Vocabulary Usage. This part of the XAT preparation puts great store by extensive good reading on your part.
  • Data Interpretation features some questions on graphs, charts, and tables.
  • The Decision Making segment contains a mix of questions on Tables and Caselets, Probability, Linear Arrangements, Puzzles, Blocks, Sequential Arrangements etc.

XAT Preparation Tips

  • To brush up your maths for XAT exam preparation, revisit your old books from classes 5 to 10. Relearn the basics and solve the problems given in these books. Try to work on tables, fractions-decimal conversions, squares, cubes for fast mental calculations as it will help you save time. 
  • For Verbal Ability, read good novels, newspapers, and periodicals on regular basis, with a clear focus on new words and grammar. We would strongly advise you to read the editorial pages of The Hindu for this purpose.
  • Improve your Decision-Making ability with the help of puzzle books and solve the problems found in other books.

Part 1

  • General Awareness: -This segment has 30 questions on current events and Static GK. The GK questions in XAT may be featured on the following topics: 
    • Awards and winners
    • Government and Politics
    • Science
    • Famous Personalities
    • Business
    • Economy
  • Essay Writing: - Going by the past trends, you must prepare for abstract topics for essay writing questions. The topics are based on either a common phrase or an idiom with a philosophical hint implied within. You may not also come across a straightforward essay topic on the current issue. You have to be ready for all kinds of essay topics. The essay is timed for 20 minutes only; so you need to practice writing essays in a time bound fashion.
