All India Radio Starts "Aao Angrezi Seekhein" Project; Teaches Spoken English to School Students

A programme is launched by the All India Radio for giving spoken English lessons to school students. The project is called "Aao Angrezi Seekhein" and will be aired at 11 a.m. on all working days.

The All India Radio (AIR) has decided to help students in brushing up their English speaking skills now. A programme called “Aao Angrezi Seekhein” will be on air from 1st September 2019, Sunday, at 11 a.m. on all working days.

The project has been started jointly by the United Nations International Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyaan (SSA) of the government of Uttar Pradesh. It will include a total of 120 episodes that will be of a duration of 15 minutes each. These episodes will be broadcast for the academic session of 2019-2020.

The pilot project will be launched from KGBV (the Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas) where the students of classes 5th to 8th and junior high schools will start taking their English lessons by listening to the programme aired on the radio. The management committee and mothers of all students will also attend the radio broadcast on the first day.

As per the officials of the Basic Education Department, the primary focus of the programme is on the students of class 7th this year but efforts will also be made for encouraging the students of class 6th and class 8th and they will also attend all the auditory classes. An official said that the 120 English teaching episodes are developed by experts and will be aired by the All India Radio (AIR).

The official further said that the Block Education officers and teachers have been directed to ensure that a properly functioning radio is available at the school campus before 1st September. The project aims to help students learn the English language by listening. It is a significant step that will assist in boosting the morale and raising the confidence of students in regard to their English speaking skills. It will guide students in using the English language in daily conversations and will also stress on teaching the correct pronunciation of words.

Special instructions have been given to all teachers to note down the highlights of every episode in a notebook and then revise those lessons with students. As this is a programme that will aid in the improvement of English speaking in students through listening, they will not be required to do writing work.

Basic Shiksha Adhikaris have been directed by Vijay Kiran Anand, the State Project Director, regarding the suitable and appropriate implementation of the project. Sessions of discussion will also be held to supplement English speaking and learning among students.
