Chennai School Holiday Update 2 December 2025; Orange alert issued, heavy rain in various locations

CHENNAI: As the 'Deep Depression' is located just 50 km from Chennai, the city has been receiving heavy rains since the morning of December 1. On the other hand, IMD has issued an 'Orange Alert' to Chennai till 8 AM on December 2, which means there is a chance for heavy rains. Several parts of Chennai are facing waterlogging issues, accompanied by heavy rains and wind. On December 1, the District Collector did not announce a holiday for schools and colleges despite the heavy rain conditions. Children from various parts of the city faced difficulty in reaching the school by the scheduled time. In most parts of the city, children and parents were seen carrying umbrellas. Certain areas also witnessed traffic disruption due to heavy rain and wind.

Will there be a Chennai School Holiday on 2 December 2025?

A decision on Chennai schools' holiday on December 2 completely depends on the decision of the District Collector. If there is heavy rain in the evening and night of December 1, there is a chance for a school holiday . The district authorities might assess the weather conditions during the early hours of December 2 to decide on the school holiday. In case a school holiday is announced, the same information shall be updated here. Students are advised not to believe any rumours and wait for the official update.

Parents and Students Criticise Government for Not Declaring School Holiday in Chennai on December 1

While there has been a heavy downpour in Chennai during the early hours of December 1, the district administration did not take any decision on the school holiday. As a result, children accompanied by parents had to reach schools in heavy rain. There was a traffic disruption as well in various parts of the city. The district administration of Chennai has been criticised by parents for not taking a prompt decision. Tamil Nadu School Holiday on 1 December 2025 was only announced for the Puducherry and Karaikal regions.

The chances of a school holiday on December 2 (Tuesday) in other districts of Tamil Nadu are low. Kancheepuram, Cuddalore, Vellore and Tiruvallur are still receiving heavy rains, but the conditions might improve by the night of December 1 (Monday). Therefore, there is a minimal chance of the school holiday. However, district collectors might take the decision on school holiday in these districts if there is a heav rain during the early hours of December 2.
