Under the new system, Vocational Education (Kaushal Vikas) has been added to the core promotional subjects, while the Third Language (R3) has been made a mandatory qualifying requirement for students in Delhi schools.
The revised framework applies to state-run and private recognised schools and introduces changes to subject evaluation, Mathematics assessment, and future-skills education.

6 Main Promotional Subjects & Vocational Learning
Under the updated scheme, student promotion from Class 9 to Class 10 will depend entirely on performance across six main subjects: Language-1, Language-2, Mathematics, Science, Social Science, and Vocational Education (Kaushal Vikas). Vocational Education has been brought into the core promotional group to equip students early with practical skill sets, career-oriented knowledge, and workplace readiness.
Third Language (R3) Rules & Class 10 Board Exam Qualifier
Students will continue with the same three-language combination studied in Class 8, designating one as their R3 Third Language in Class 9.
- R3 will be evaluated internally by schools, and student marksheets will display only "Qualified" or "Not Qualified".
- A student failing to qualify in R3 can still be promoted to Class 10 if all six main promotional criteria are met.
- Students must clear the Class 9 R3 requirement while studying in Class 10. Candidates will not be permitted to sit for the Class 10 Board Examinations until the Third Language assessment is cleared.
Advanced Level Exams and Minimum Passing Criteria
The DoE has discontinued the separate Basic and Standard Mathematics tracks for Class 9, mandating a common curriculum for all students. However, students seeking deeper academic rigor can choose Mathematics Advanced, Science Advanced, or both. These 1-hour, 25-mark tests evaluate Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS). Scoring 50% or more in these advanced papers will be highlighted as a special achievement on student report cards without impacting overall promotion aggregates.
To secure promotion to Class 10, students must score at least 33% separately in internal/practical assessments and external exams across the six main subjects, along with a minimum of 25% in the final annual examination. Existing guidelines regarding grace marks and compartment examinations remain applicable for candidates failing in up to three main subjects.
