Saraswati Engineering College in Kharghar received a notice from the directorate of technical education (DTE) to refund the money that has been charged from the students on the name of late fee. According to DTE, the amount charged by the college was illegal as they are not allowed to do so. Students who were paying the fee a bit late were charged a fine of Rs 100 per day along with the admission fee.

The letter was sent to the college by DTE two month ago. According to the letter the fine was illegally imposed on the students which is against the norms under which the college is run. Therefore, the college was asked to refund the entire amount back to the students immediately. Also, the college will have to stop extracting further fine from students and in case this does not happen, the department is free to take action against the college under the Maharashtra Educational Institutions (Prohibition of Capitation Fee) Act, 1987.

According to records, it was found out that out of around 3000 odd students, the fine was paid by 700-800 students along with the admission fee.
