DU to Conduct Entrance Exam for UG Courses from 2022

Delhi University (DU) made an announcement and issued a notification on Dec 20 that it will be conducting UG admissions for the academic year 2022-23 on the basis of the Central University Common Entrance Test (CUCET) or Delhi University Common Entrance Test (DUCET). This notification was issued following the meeting held on December 17th, 2021. Further, detailed information on CUCET and DUCET will be released by the DU.

Earlier, more than 60,000 UG seats from various courses of Delhi University were filled through the Merit-Based Method. Scores of Class 12th exams played a vital role in the admission process.

However, this move has been met with opposition by the Democratic Teachers Federation (DTF). They have termed it as a 'wrong move'. They are of the opinion that the notification and entrance-based examination is a part of the NEP and does not stem from any organic need.

The DTF further states, that students will be deprived of any new opportunities, as there will fixed number of seats only. Also, Classes XI and XII were regarded as the core educational base. Now, with the CUCET, their value will be reduced and the coaching market will grow. Students will be confined to their courses and will not have the flexibility to change their streams. Moreover, students from less privileged backgrounds will not get equal opportunities to take admission to Delhi University. Only the students who can afford coaching classes will have the upper hand in these new reforms.

Meanwhile, the Secretary of DTF, Abha Dev Habib states that the Central Government and other Universities with regards to education have failed in the current Covid-19 situation. Multiple educational institutions have shut down and in such situations experimenting with new reforms is not a good idea.

The Students Federation of India (SFI) Delhi University has also opposed the idea of entrance tests. They stand unified with the DTF decision. Even the SFI DU states that entrance tests will not be beneficial for students from rural areas. Only the students who can afford to pay for the coaching centers will have an edge as far as admissions are concerned.

As per the recent admission details, CBSE has always dominated DU admissions. Statistics show that 90% of the students are from a CBSE background and only 10% are from various state boards. The entrance-based admissions will make the situation even worse for the state board students.
