Government Starts Enrolment in Green Skill Development Programme

  • Govt. will introduce 30 green skill courses to be offered at 84 institutes with an aim to increase the number of skilled employees in the environment sector.
  • They have also launched a mobile app for the same known as GSPD-ENVIS.
Government Starts Enrolment in Green Skill Development Programme

The government has started enrolment in 30 green skill courses under its Green Skill Development Programme (GSPD) with an aim to create more than five lakh job opportunities by the year 2021. They have also come up with a mobile app for the same known as GSPD-ENVIS. The mobile app allows you to apply for the courses online.

The 30 green skill courses introduced by GSPD are expected to be offered at 84 institutes such as Bombay Natural History Society, Mumbai; Botanical Survey of India, Pune and Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun. The cost of these courses will be supported by the Union Environment Ministry.

According to Harsh Vardhan, Union Environment Minister, around 80,000 students will be imparted green skills through this programme which will help in filling skill gaps in the environment sector. The initiative will help to increase the number of skilled people by 2.25 lakh by next year and there will be 5 lakh skilled people in environment sector by 2021.

GSPD Eligibility Criteria:

  • Each course to be introduced under GSPD will have different eligibility criteria depending upon the course type and skills required.
  • However, the minimum eligibility criteria to apply for the programme is Class 10 dropout.

Listed below are some of the courses that will be functional from the 2018-19 academic session:

  • Eco-Tourism
  • River Dolphin Conservation
  • Propagation and Management of Bamboo
  • Pest Control
  • Forest Entomology
  • Scuba Diving for Marine Conservation
  • Operation and Management of Sewage Treatment Plants
  • Paralegal Practices in Environment Laws and Forestry

Apart from increasing the percentage of skilled employees in the environment sector, GSPD aims to provide skills to dropout students so that they can find employment. As per Senior Economic Advisor of Environment Ministry, Anandi Subramanian, around 31% of students in India drop the school after class 10th which makes it very difficult for them to find a suitable job. Hence, GSPD will help them to find employment.
