As per the New Education Policy, the Ministry of Human Resource Development is likely to be called the Ministry of Education. The name was recommended to bring back focus on learning and education.

HRD Ministry to Be Renamed as Ministry of Education (MoE)

The New Education Policy made a key recommendation to bring back the focus on learning and education. According to the recommendation, the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) should be renamed as MoE (the Ministry of Education). The recommendation was made by K Kasturi Rangan, ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) Chief and a group of experts led by him. If the recommendation gets accepted, the MHRD will be redesignated as MoE i.e., the Ministry of Education.

As per a senior government official, the ministry has almost completed a final draft of the name change policy. The draft will soon be sent to the cabinet to further the process. The senior official also added that the HRD Ministry has included many suggestions like establishing a Rashtriya Shiksha Aayog and launching the BLA (Bachelor of Liberal Arts) programme.

Replying to the specific interrogation on the proposal of renaming the ministry, the official said that no suggestion from the draft education policy was rejected. He furthered the argument informing that many top functionaries have no objection with the redesignation of the HRD Ministry to the Ministry of Education.

Another interesting proposal that was made in the draft New Education Policy was to forbid private schools from using ‘Public’ in their names. The ministry held extensive consultations to bring up the New Education Policy. The new policy is the consequence of concerns over language policies. The concerns were expressed by many state education secretaries and MPs from Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Telangana, Kerala, Odisha and Puducherry. Now whether the policy comes in action or not, will only be known after the proposal is sent to the cabinet.
