IIT Bombay Asks Research Students to Vacate Their Hostels

Faced with the shortage of residential space on campus IIT Bombay has asked the Post-doctoral fellows and research associates to vacate their rooms on the Powai campus and the hostel inmates have started moving out.
The management of the institute is now getting firm and not allowing students to occupy room indefinitely as they have to make space for the freshers. Now the hostel inmates have started applying for jobs and working on their research papers to complete their Ph.D.

Several senior research students have opposed the move on the part of the management. Generally, students get about six to seven months to publish their research work in science journals, even after they submit out thesis and Viva. Now we are working on that. But unfortunately, the institute think we are wasting their time and space, said a research student.

Areas where students can get cheap rentals are:

  • Kurla

  • Kharghar

  • Kandivli

  • Borivli

A number of post-doctoral fellows end up working with in-house professors on their projects during this time. Since all of them have been asked to vacate the hostel room, they have to find out accommodations somewhere else. Students staying in the hostels of the campus spend a meager Rs 1,100, whereas living outside the campus they have to spend between Rs 20,000 and Rs 22,000 for a one-room-kitchen flat. Now they have started moving towards areas with cheaper rentals.
