The newer Indian Institutes of Technology will now be able to retain its faculty as an order has been passed where established IITs will not be able to hire faculty from the younger institutes. The decision has been made to ensure stable growth and development of the newer institutes.

IIT Council Faculty Proposal

With the third generation of Indian Institutes of Technology set up and gaining traction at a snail’s pace, the IIT council has decided to help the new institutes grow quicker. The newer IITs have raised an issue where their faculties have been hired by the more established IITs in India. This issue has been looked over in a meeting that had been conducted recently.

Sources state that the established IITs will no longer be able to hire the talented and the newly recruited faculty from the newer IITs. The IIT Council has passed a rule that has been made to help newer IITs such as in Bhilai, Goa and Jammu to retain their faculties. As per the rule, the established IITs cannot hire faculties from the new IITs unless they have completed two years of employment at the parent institution.

The proposal that had been set in front of the council stated that the “3-G IITs are in project mode and expected to grow slowly.” It further added that to ensure that the quality faculty stay at the institution, the IITs invest effort and time in the entire process of faculty selection. Retaining the faculty at the institution will ensure growth and development both for the faculty and the institutions, the proposal added.

Sources state that the already established IITs like in Delhi, Bombay and Madras have built up their brand among the faculties and students. Due to this, some of the best students opt for the more established IITs, meanwhile, the newer IITs have to work towards attracting students to its courses.

One of the directors of a new IIT stated that even though they look at the established IITs as mentors, there have been situations where their faculties have been hired by the older IITs and the newers ones are left without a backup or faculty. Thus the demand for keeping the faculty employed at the institutes for a minimum duration of 2 years has been put forth. The proposal added that they are able to attract faculty at the entry-level, however, there is a lack of senior-level faculty at the institute.
