The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi has partnered with the budget lodging platform OYO in order to house the increased number of students who have enrolled in IIT this year. Around 550 boys have been made to live in OYO-partnered nearby accommodation and the female students have been accommodated in faculty guest flats inside the campus itself. IIT Delhi has witnessed high enrolment this year due to EWS quota, women-only quota. Also, there has been an increase in the Ph.D. seats as a part of the IoE status.
This year approximately 100 students registered themselves under the EWS quota in IIT, Delhi and 50 girls registered themselves under the female-only quota. Gradually the institute is increasing the number of Ph.D. students for the Institute of Eminence status tag.
The Deputy Director of IIT Delhi, M Balakrishnan said that IIT-Delhi is facing a hostel crunch and hence, it has decided to build two new hostels for female and male students. He added that it will be impossible to accommodate all the students on the campus even after the completion of the two hostels as the number of students enrolling are increasing every year. He assured that the hostels will be completed by next summer.
As the Indian Institute of Technology is near the Indira Gandhi International airport it faces many limitations. However, it has collaborated with Airbnb and OYO to resolve this issue. The institute will bear the additional cost for the off-campus lodging.
Many students are taking admission through quotas in IIT, Delhi and it is very crucial for the IIT-Delhi administration to solve the problem related to accommodation. For more news and updates related to IIT, Delhi stay tuned to CollegeDekho.
