Can IIT Delhi's Smart Traffic Monitoring System Regulate Over Speeding?

Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi has developed a smart traffic monitoring system to regulate over speeding of vehicles. With an objective to test the device, IIT Delhi had installed it on the campus last month with the help of which speeding vehicles were identified through a camera that detects the number plates.

The device also sent warning messages to the drivers who drove the vehicle more than the stipulated speed limit. The IIT Delhi campus has also been equipped with Smart Notice Boards – Digital Boards where notices are filtered according to the target audience. Such a device, if commercialised on a large scale, can turn out to be significantly beneficial to regulate road accidents which are caused due to over-speeding.

IIT Delhi has developed the Smart Traffic Monitoring System in collaboration with Vehant Technologies, a start-up established by an IIT alumnus. So far, only one camera has been installed near the IIT hospital to collect all the data pertaining to the speed of vehicles. The device, at present, can only send SMS alerts to students and faculty members of IIT Delhi if they drive the car at a speed more than the prescribed one. The institute is planning to expand the scope of the device in future.

On the other hand, IIT Delhi will be organising an ‘Industry Day’ on September 23, 2017. The event will witness the discussions and projects on five themes including: -

  • Smart Cities
  • Energy
  • Affordable Healthcare
  • Defence
  • Environment

Giving details about the event, Mr. Balakrishnan, Deputy Director of Strategy and Planning revealed that innovations and projects such as Smart Notice Boards and Smart Traffic Monitoring System would be exhibited during the event. Renowned personalities and industrialists will grace the event, he added.

Posters and projects on water waste management, development of affordable biotech medicines, conversion of coal to methanol to energy and soft armour development will be also exhibited as a part of ‘Industry Day’.
