According to Professor U.B. Desai, Director of IIT Hyderabad, it is important that Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) focus on research and development that is not only innovative but also impacts the society at a larger level.
He shared this opinion keeping in mind as to how world class institutes such as MIT, Stanford, Berkeley etc. are working by bringing about technological contributions that have made a difference in the society.

These days, students who come to IITs are familiar with latest technologies and gadgets that are introduced every now and then. Their knowledge is more or less up-to-date, with many aspirations in their heart and mind. In order that they are able to achieve these goals, innovative pedagogy will have to be introduced to make sure students are given ample opportunities to conquer their domain of interest.
He also said that with the introduction and setting up of new IITs, the primary focus of these should be on quality education to come at par with the old IITs that have gained popularity and recognition after being in the industry for many years now.

About 14 lakh students in the country aspire to get into premier engineering institutions every year. But IITs only have 10,000 seats to offer to these students, because of which there is tough competition.
