Most of the students belonging to SC/ST categories belonging to Karnataka failed to seed their Aadhaar number which is mandatory for availing scholarships. Among them, most of the students are from rural areas, and mobile phone is mandatory for seeking Aadhaar number. The deadline for enrolling Aadhaar for scholarships was February 15, 2017. It is learnt that most of the students from rural areas do not have a mobile phone to complete the process.
During the online enrollment of Aadhaar number, a One Time Password (OTP) is sent to the registered mobile number, and most of the students from rural areas do not own a cell phone. The problem arose when many students had given their relatives’ mobile numbers during the time of enrollment for Aadhaar card. One of the students expressed that he had given his relatives number initially and he was unable to get OTP on that mobile number. The OTP was sent to the old number instead.
Therefore, most of the students raised complaints and sent recommendations to the Social Welfare Department of the state and requested the authorities to give more time for seeding the Aadhaar number for direct transfer of scholarships. One of the officials of the department revealed that the recommendations and complaints made by the students were taken into consideration and the decision will be taken soon.
