Of all the IITs across the country, IIT-BHU has the most number of seats that are lying vacant. As per HRD Ministry, there has been a rise in the number of vacant seats from past five years and the ministry has been asking the institutes to address the issue and has also made several recommendations to avoid the same.

As per the records, around 11,000 seats are lying vacant at the IITs.The ministry data reveals that around 250 seats were vacant in the year 2013 and the number went up to 121 by 2017. However, IIT-BHU has the maximum number of vacant seats out of 23 Indian Institute of Technology. Followed by The Indian School of Mines which had 23 vacant seats in 2016 and 2017. Whereas IIT Delhi had zero vacancies during the year 2013 and 2015 but in 2016 and 2017 there were two vacant seats in each year. To minimize the vacancies in IITs, NITs and other premier institutions, HRD Ministry has made several recommendations and has also introduced suitable measures.

HRD Ministry has asked the institution to review the number of seats in each sector on the basis of career opportunities, jobs, infrastructure, training and internship facilities and national requirement. They have also recommended the institutes to close shut down some programme if needed. The committee has also asked them to review their counseling process by introducing multiple rounds and taking active measures to streamline the process such as launching a helpline for aspirants and introducing inquiry centers to help students during the admission process.
