- The status of the deemed university is an accreditation awarded to the higher learning institutes that are working at a very high standard in the specific area of study.
The higher education system in India is a compilation of public and private institutions. The government of India and state governments support the public universities, while private universities are supported by societies and other statutory bodies. Universities in India, whether public or private, are recognised by University Grants Commission (UGC). According to the UGC’s latest list, there are 123 private universities in India. These private universities are also called as deemed universities or deemed-to-be university.

The status of the deemed university is an accreditation awarded to the higher learning institutes that are working with very high standards in the specific area of study. The central government awards deemed university status to an institute on the advice of UGC. Deemed universities in India enjoy academic status and privileges at par with public universities. Until last year, deemed universities were allowed to use ‘University’ tag in their name. However, the UGC directed the deemed varsities to drop the name ‘university’ and recall the old name. Now, deemed universities can be termed as deemed-to-be university.

Except for medical deemed institutes, many deemed universities that offer general and engineering courses conduct an entrance test for admissions. A few universities offer direct admission based on merit. Deemed institutes are free to frame curriculum, conduct exams and declare results on their own without any kind of dependency.
