List of Fake Universities in India is released by UGC every year to warn students to not pursue degree courses from certain fraudulent institutions. The University Grants Commission (UGC) is the nodal regulator of higher education in the country that keeps a check on the quality of the universities across the country. The UGC has released a list of 20 fake universities and also found 2 more in violation of norms. The universities have been declared fake on the basis of the complaints issued by the students, their parents, the general public, and electronic print media.
Apart from the 20 fake universities, 2 more institutes - Bhartiya Shiksha Parishad in Lucknow and the Indian Institute of Planning and Management in New Delhi have been found in violation of the UGC Act, 1956. The matters of these 2 universities are sub-judice in the court. According to the UGC Act 1956, universities can award degrees only if they are established under the central, provincial, or state Act. Deemed institutes established under Section 3 of the UGC Act are only eligible to award degrees.
