More Than 2 Lakh Indian Students Studying in US Universities, Suggests Report

The number of Indians studying in the US increased by almost 3% to over 2 lakh out of the total of 10 lakh students studying in the US in the 2018-19 academic year. India is only second to China in the number of students in the US.

Open Doors Report on International Education Exchange has revealed that the number of Indian students studying in the US has increased by 3% to over 2 lakh in the 2018-19 academic year. India alone makes up to over 18% of all international students in the United States of America. The Open Doors report also revealed that India is second to China in the number of students studying in the US.

As per records, a total of 2,49,763Indian students are currently enrolled in different American universities. India is ranked second in the list of foreign students studying in the US. China has topped the list with statistics revealing that around 4,81,106 go to the US for higher education. South Korea (95,701), Saudi Arabia (72,358) and Japan (41,862) are the other top countries that send most of its students to the US for higher studies.

India tops the list of students with STEM OPT authorisation in the US. Of the 89,839 STEM OPT international students in 2017, around 50,507 were from India. China, South Korea, Taiwan and Iran are the other top countries on the list.

According to the latest biannual report, 49% of the F and M student population in the United States belongs to China and India. The interest in the US higher education continues to grow because of the global rankings and the wide range of career opportunities that are linked to top colleges in the United States. Over a period of time, both India and China have witnessed a proportional growth between 1% and 2% in terms of student population flocking abroad.

The level of participation from both these countries makes Asia the most popular Continent of origin in this study. 77% of all international students in the US belong to Asia as per the report of titled Student and Exchange Visitor Programme (SEVIS) of the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations.

Apart from India and China, there has been a decline in the number of Asian students coming to study in the US. Themajor decline is recorded in countries such as Saudi Arabia, Yemen, and South Korea. However, there has been an increase in the number of students from Cambodia, Pakistan, and Burma.

The J-1 exchange visitor population has increased by 4% since March 2017. Last year the number was 2,01,408 and now it has gone up to 2,09,568 in total. The J-1 visa offers educational and career opportunities through exchange programs in the United States which are taken care of by the US State Department.
