The 17th campus of the prestigious National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) is being set up at Panchkula, Chandigarh. The foundation stone for the same has been laid and the campus is expected to be ready by 2019. For the time being, the classes will be held at the IT Park in Chandigarh.
The new campus is coming up at a cost of INR 100 crore which will spread over an area of 10.45 acres of land. There will be around 230 seats in the first batch. Around 20% seats will be reserved for the students of Haryana domicile.
Institute will offer degree courses to students in the following areas:
- 4-year Bachelor of Design (B.Des) in Fashion and Textile Design
- 4-year Bachelor of Fashion Technology (B.F.Tech) in Apparel Production
- 2-year Master of Fashion Management (M.F.M)
- 2-year Master of Design (M.Des)
- One-year and six-month duration certificate course programmes
The construction work of the institute will be carried out by Haryana Police Housing Corporation. It is also learnt that the students of the institute will be guided and trained by several prominent international experts. The institute has entered into an agreement with 32 reputed global organisations from different parts of the world.
The Haryana government will give INR 100 crore for the development of the campus. The amount will be spent on construction of the building, developing infrastructure, hostels, furniture, IT software and hardware, vehicles and construction of the boundary walls. The funds will be allocated in a phased manner.
NIFT has 16 campuses in different cities all over India. It's headquarters are located in New Delhi.
