NIT Rourkela imporves in QS World Sustainability Rankings 2026

NIT Rourkela has improved its ranking in QS World Sustainability Rankings 2025 from 644 last year to 652 this year, globally. The initiatives contributing to this ranking included Swachhata drives on a weekly basis, Sustainable Development Goal, and more.

NIT Rourkela has recently improved its ranking in QS World University Rankings: Sustainability 2026. As per the rankings released on Tuesday, NIT Rourkela ranking took a hike from 644 last year to 652 globally, making it a continuous top-ranked NIT in this category. Apart from this, the institute ranks 180th in Asia and 20th in India in the QS sustainability framework.

K Umamaheshwar Rao, the director of NIT-R, said that the institute’s improved performance shows the systematic planning and the never-ending efforts of the campus community. Along with this, he also mentioned the contributions of the students, faculty members and staff who are responsible for sustainable activities resulting in the institute’s global visibility.

According to the NIT Rourkela sources, a total of 2002 institutes participated in the QS Sustainability Rankings 2026, comprising 827 from Asia and 103 from India. The sustainability framework basically assesses the social and environmental impact of universities as the centres of education and research. HB Sahu, the chairman of the Sustainable Development Committee, underlined several initiatives that contributed to strengthening the sustainability profile of NIT Roorkee. These initiatives included conducting weekly clean campus Swachhata drives, Sustainable Development Goal, support for sustainability-focused startups, etc.

Earlier this year, NIT Rourkela bagged 9th place in the SDG category of the NIRF rankings 2025, surfacing as the top NIT in India, and the only institute from Odisha to feature in the top 10.
