On January 06, 2018, Nobel Laureate in Physics (2014), Professor Hiroshi Amano delivered a lecture on 'Blue LEDs and Transformative Electronics for Developing Sustainable Smart Society' at Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT – Deemed University) Bhubaneswar. KIIT organised the lecture as a part of KIIT Knowledge Tree Lecture Series. Director of KIIT School of Biotechnology, Dr. Mrutyunjay Suar introduced Professor Hiroshi Amano.

Addressing the students, Professor Hiroshi Amano pointed that the blue LED (Light Emitting Diode) lamp assures great promise for improving the quality of life for 1.5 billion people across the globe, specifically those who lack electricity grids.

Adding further, the Nobel Laureate in Physics stated that lightning plays a paramount role in the daily lives of people. The efficient light sources have been possible only through the development of LEDs. After a research, it was figured out that creation of blue LEDs is very difficult than green and red diodes. With a motive to create efficient blue LEDs, Professor Hiroshi Amano collaborated with Professor Shuji Nakamura and Professor Isamu Akasaki to use the difficult-to-handle GaN (Gallium Nitride), he added.

Professor Hiroshi informed that the annual electricity consumption in Japan was reduced by 7% due to the effective use of LED lights. Similarly, LED lights play an overridden role in regulating the CO2 emissions and global warming, he added.

Expressing his views on ‘Transformative Electronics for Developing Sustainable Smart Energy’, Professor Hiroshi Amano gave details about activities that are being carried out in the field of “Wireless Power Transmission Network” and “Internet of Energy”. He also gave valuable information about future technological innovations like air taxis and drone superhighway.

Professor Hiroshi Amano received Noble Prize in Physics (2014) along with Professor Shuji Nakamura and Professor Isamu Akasaki for the invention of “efficient blue LEDs”.
