The Odisha government is not happy with the poor performance of colleges and universities in the recent NIRF rankings. It has sent a letter to all universities, demanding an explanation for the underperformance.

Odisha Govt Demands Explanation from State-Run Institutions over Poor Representation in NIRF Rankings

The Odisha Government has asked all the state-run technical universities to explain why they were incapable of making it to the rankings of National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF). The government is agitated over the under-representation of the colleges and universities of the state and has, therefore, demanded an explanation within a week’s time.

The institutes of Odisha have been asked by the government to submit a detailed report explaining all the reasons that have held them back from securing a rank in the list of NIRF. The Skill Development and Technical Education Department (SDTE Department) sent a letter to the institutes which stated that Biju Patnaik University of Technology (BPUT) or any of its affiliated or constituent colleges failed at getting a rank in the recently published NRIF rankings of 2019 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development.

The letter from the SDTE Department also mentioned that the institutes were asked to prepare a time-bound road map in July 2018 so as to get prepared for participating in the ranking process of NIRF for 2019. However, no response was received from any college or university in this regard by the government or SDTE Department. The matters were made worse when no government-run technical and professional institute participated in the annual ranking process of NIRF except VSSUT.

Several institutions have been asked to furnish an elaborate report. Some of them are Indira Gandhi Institute of Technology of Sarang (IGIT), Biju Patnaik University of Technology (BPUT), Parala Maharaja Engineering College of Berhampur (PMEC), College of Engineering and Technology of Bhubaneswar (CET), Institute of Management and Information Technology of Cuttack (IMIT), Government College of Engineering of Keonjhar and Kalahandi (GEC), and College of IT and Management Education of Bhubaneswar (CIME).

IIT Bhubaneswar and KIIT University ranked 46th and 50th respectively.
