The Social Justice and Empowerment Parliamentary Standing Committee has shown concern on the maintenance allowance that is "meagre" for the post-matric scholarship scheme for tribal candidates beneficiaries.
The Tribal Affairs Ministry has been asked to revise the same as soon as possible. According to a report tabled in the Parliament on December 12, the allowance for maintenance for undergraduate/postgraduate/PhD and other programmes ranges between Rs 230 and Rs 550 for day scholars and Rs 380 and Rs 1,200 for hostelers.
The report also said that the amount is quite meagre which is required to be revised due to the rising cost of education. The committee has also shown despair for not have been revised till now which has been urged since the year 2010.
Poor tribal students have been struggling to complete their education due to this and hence the Committee has urged the ministry to address this issue at the earliest.
The details of the beneficiaries are maintained and uploaded by the Union Territories (UTs) and states on the system portal of direct benefit transfer management information.
The ministry has been struggling to lower the time lag between the application date and allowance disbursal, as noted by the Committee. This is to make sure that the scholarship is issued in the same academic year.
The objective of the Post-Matric Scholarship Scheme is to give scholarships to students who belong to the economically weaker sections of the country. It seeks to provide them with equal and better opportunities for higher education.
