Stanford University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard University have topped the list of third annual Reuters Top 100 ranking of the world’s most exceptional and innovative universities.
With this ranking framework, Thomson Reuters aims to identify and rank higher learning institutes with respect to their contribution towards the advancement of science, the invention of modern technology and powering new industries and markets. The rankings have been compiled in partnership with Clarivate Analytics and are based on appropriate data analysis of different indicators such as research paper citations and patent filings.
This is for the third consecutive year that Silicon Valley, California based Stanford University has been ranked as the most innovative university in the world. Stanford has significantly contributed to the development of a contemporary networked world. A professor at Stanford designed a primary communication standard for the internet while alumni founded some of the biggest technology companies in the world including Netflix, Intel, Google and Hewlett-Packard. In the contemporary world, Stanford University continues to produce original technology and research. Numerous innovations that originated at Stanford University are often cited by researchers elsewhere in the private industry and academia.

Comprehensively, the top ranks of the innovative universities in the world remain widely unchanged with nine of last year’s highest-ranked universities continue to remain in the top 10. These top 10 universities are the most elite institutions and well-established universities based in Western Europe and the United States.
Moreso, MIT and Harvard bagged the second and third place in the rankings consecutively for the third year.
The University of Pennsylvania has shown improvement in the rankings by securing the fourth rank. Last year, the varsity was ranked eighth among the top 10 innovative universities.
Distinctively, there are only two Asian universities in top 20 - from South Korea. Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology is one that takes the majority of the classes in English language medium.
Overall, the top 100 list has 51 universities from North America, 20 from Asia, 26 from Europe and 3 from the Middle East.
