All schools and higher education institutes will be shut today i.e. 17th August 2018 due to the demise of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. He passed away in the capital at the age of 93.
Manish Sisodia, Education Minister tweeted that all schools and higher education institutes will remain closed today to mourn the death of the honourable former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. He further informed that all schools including private, corporation-run, NDMC and other government-run schools will remain closed today.

Sanjay Goel, Director of Education issued an order stating the same. States like Haryana and Uttar Pradesh have announced a 7-day mourning period and have also declared a holiday on Friday for schools and colleges.
Apart from schools and colleges, all government offices and departments will remain closed as a mark of respect for the former Prime Minister.

Arvind Kejriwal, Chief Minister of Delhi said that he is deeply saddened and this is a great loss for the nation. He along with Education Minister visited AIIMS to inquire about the health of former prime minister and even requested all party leader and volunteers not to celebrate his birthday which fell on Thursday due to his deteriorating condition.
