Shiv Nadar Foundation to Launch New University in Chennai

Shiv Nadar University Foundation is all set to establish a new university in Chennai. The university will offer four undergraduate courses (two in Engineering and two in Management Studies and Commerce) for now.

Shiv Nadar, the founder of HCL Technologies is all the set to launch a new university under Shiv Nadar Foundation. The decision was made months after Anand Mahindra announced his Mahindra University in Hyderabad. The Shiv Nadar University, Chennai is set to start its first batch in April 2021. 

As of now, four courses will be available for admission, two in Engineering and two in Management Studies and Commerce. The Shiv Nadar University, Chennai will be different from the foundation's first university in Uttar Pradesh and it will be the second higher education institution in Tamil Nadu after the well known SSN College of Engineering.

The Engineering program offered by the university will be different from the program offered by the SSN College of Engineering. The two programs in Engineering will include an undergraduate degree in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science and another course in Computer Science with a special focus on the Internet of Things. The Management and Commerce courses will include full-time courses such as Bachelor of Commerce(B.Com) and Bachelor of Commerce (Professional Accounting). The university is also planning to launch a 4 years bachelor’s courses in Business Management in 2022.

Roshni Nadar Malhotra, Trustee, Shiv Nadar Foundation and Chairperson, HCL Technologies said "Shiv Nadar University Chennai will be a catalyst for novel discoveries, new research and creation of new modes of expression. It will also help create well-rounded and responsible citizens."   

The e-press conference was also joined by the Dr Kala Vijayakumar, Pro-Chancellor, Shiv Nadar University, Chennai and R Srinivasan, Founding Chancellor. R Srinivasan said that the university will focus on the holistic growth of students through an approach that has intellectual rigour, a culture of study and a continuous commitment to the industry. While the university has announced two schools, they are looking at expansion of the university including establishing a School of Law. They also invite the acclaimed scientists and academicians to join them in this venture.

Dr Raj Reddy, renowned computer scientist, University Professor at Carnegie Mellon University & winner of the Turing Award and Dr C Rangarajan, former Governor of Reserve Bank of India & one of the most eminent economists and policymakers will be mentoring the students of Shiv Nadar University. Apart from this, the university also named a renowned academician from one of the IITs as Vice-Chancellor, who will take over the position in December.
