Space Shortage at IIT-Delhi: No Rooms to Accommodate Girls

Although IITs are welcoming more girls enrolling for their engineering programmes, some of them are finding it difficult to accommodate these female students. IIT Delhi has got no room for the increased number of girls in the Institute.

Due to the lack of space in hostels, the institute has provided lodging facility for these girls in the building meant for associate professors that is adjacent to the campus.

The number of girl intake at IIT Delhi has gone up by 30% in 2017 for both undergraduate and postgraduate courses. This has left the institute with a shortage of accommodation for these new students.

Disappointed parents have complained to the HRD Minister saying that their children had to sleep on mattresses spread on the floor due to the unavailability of cots. The administration of IIT Delhi has said that placed the order for 30 to 40 cots and they will be provided to the students soon.

A senior IIT official informed that all undergraduate students have been provided accommodation in the hostel. Whereas, close to 100 masters students have temporarily been allocated rooms in assistant professor buildings.

Even in 2016, some of the students were allocated temporary accommodations but were later provided with rooms in hostels. Since the number of girls in IIT Delhi has gone up considerably, these students have been provided with mattresses by the time cots arrive.

IIT Delhi’s hostels for post-graduate students i.e. Kailash and Himadri can accommodate 900 students, however, they are fully occupied. Therefore, the administration is looking for other accommodation facilities for students.

There has been a better representation of women at IITs in 2017 as the number of female students enrolling for programmes offered by the institutes has gone up from 8% in 2016 to 9.3% in 2017. IIT Delhi has recorded admission of 94 girls in 2017 as compared to 70 girls in 2016. Enrollment in PG courses has also gone up.
