The planned satellite city New Town Kolkata will be the site of a research centre of the new St. Xavier's University in 2019. The announcement was made by Vice-Chancellor Rev Father John Felix Raj on 16 January 2018.
St. Xavier's University is one of the most renowned university in India and abroad. The new St. Xavier's University that started operating from July 2017, already has 35 researchers at work. Its research centre will start functioning from next year.
Felix Raj made the announcement at the 11th Convocation and Valedictory of St. Xavier's College in Kolkata. Adding to his words he said that, the research centre will be active for Ph.D. projects.

Partha Chatterjee, Education Minister of West Bengal recommended the university to set up a research centre by next year apart from the courses it is currently to continue to be regarded as a centre of excellence.
The former Principal of St. Xavier's College, Felix Raj added that the university that celebrates its first anniversary foundation day is spread across 17 acres of land allotted to it by the West Bengal government and will continue to disseminate excellent quality education as underscored by Education Minister Partha Chatterjee.
The evening also witnessed the highest honour given to Felix Raj. He was given ‘Nihil Ultra Award’ by present Principal Rev Dr. Dominic Savio at the 11th Convocation. The emotional moment got sealed by the words of Felix Raj who has served the college for 33 years and became the Vice-Chancellor of St. Xavier's.

There were other important programmes of the evening that included awarding 23 gold medals to students for excellence in various disciplines. Also, an announcement of the international torch light peace tour was made by present Principal Rev Dr. Dominic Savio. He said that the aim of the tour will be to promote native mother tongues across the globe. The tour will be a collaboration of St. Xavier's College (Kolkata) Alumni Association with the Bengali Literary Society.
The torchlight tour will start on February 21, 2018, from Sahid Bedi, University of Dhaka, Bangladesh and go to St Joseph's College, Bengaluru. Further, it will move to Asansol St Xavier's College, Burdwan St Xavier's College, St Xavier's College, Raghabhpur, St Xavier's University, Rajarhat and finally terminate at St Xavier's College, Kolkata.
