UGC Issues Guidelines for Academic Staff Appointment

The University Grants Commission has issued regulations for the appointment of academic staff in the universities and colleges. The commission has mentioned that there is a minimum qualification that is required for any designation. The institutions can conduct direct recruitment governed by the UGC regulations.

The UGC has also notified other measures for the maintenance of the standards of higher education. All the amendments to these principal regulations have been made and are issued time to time, and hence are effective from the date of publication of the notification in the Gazette of India.

The UGC has been receiving queries regarding the applicability of Principal Regulations, 2016 and their amendments. The UGC clarified that the amendments have to be notified during the issuance of advertisement subject to following conditions:-

  • University has to follow the UGC regulations on minimum qualifications for teachers and other academic staff
  • Advertisement of the posts has to be published before the publication of subsequent amendments
  • Selection criteria or the process followed during the selection prescribed by UGC regulations and their amendments, in operation on the date of announcement of advertisement, have to be followed
  • Modifications are not allowed in the subsequent advertisements
