UGC Suggests Setting Up of ‘Women Studies’ Centre in Higher Education Institutes

Women Studies Centre in Colleges and Varsities Proposed by Universities Grants Council. These women studies centre will focus on marginalised and disadvantaged women in the society such as women belonging to SC/ST, women with disabilities etc.

UGC Suggests Setting Up of ‘Women Studies’ Centre in Higher Education Institutes

To focus on marginalised and disadvantaged women in society, the UGC or University Grants Commission has issued guidelines to open centres for Women Studies’ in Universities and Colleges affiliated under it. A UGC official has suggested that the studies will include women from Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe and also Women with Disabilities. Women living in an unsafe environment will also be a part of the studies of the proposed curriculum. The UGC has sought fast actions from the institutions it issued guidelines for.

UGC mentioned in the guidelines that it is mandatory for all institutions that set up the Women's study centres to send an annual report to the University Grants Council’s advisory committee about the findings, researches, and developments.

Another official suggested that it is necessary for a Women Studies centre to conduct a balanced, practical, critical and comprehensive study of women with respect to their contribution to society. It will also help in understanding India’s socio-economic balance and realities about governance.

The centres will focus on studying and observing the need for women in today's era and the role of women in national and global perspectives. It will also collect knowledge about the diverse needs of women of India in its social and economic context. The Centres will also look at finding a way to bring women on the path of development for the country.

The study centres in every College and University will be evaluated on the basis of their achievements, workshops, seminars and the social work they will do either with the NGOs or individually.
