UP Government’s Restrictions on Mobile Use in State Universities and Degree Colleges

After news of banning mobile phones in state universities and degree colleges had been released, the UP government has refuted all allegations regarding the order. Officials from the state government have declared that no such order has been issued by the Government.

Mobile Use Restrictions in UP Universities

After various news, which had been spread online, on the ban of Mobile Phones in universities in Uttar Pradesh by the UP Government, officials from the government have refused any such decision.

The Deputy Chief Minister, Dinesh Sharma, had refuted all allegations stating that the Yogi Adityanath government did not pass any regulations on the ban of using mobile phones in the state Universities and degree colleges. He stated that there is an order which requires students to either switch off their mobile phones or keep them on silent mode during classes, which has been in effect for years.

A news agency, which reported that the Government had banned mobile phones in the state universities, stated that the Directorate of Higher Education issued an order which restricted teachers and students alike to enter the colleges with their mobile phones.

The Director of Higher Education in UP, Dr Vandana Sharma, while speaking to the media declared that no such information or order has been issued by her office to ban mobile phones in Universities and degree colleges.

An official from the Education Department stated that the order had been issued in Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University in Kanpur. The order directed the department heads to ensure that the students do not use their mobile phones during classes in institutions affiliated to the University. The University registrar, Dr Vinod Kumar Singh stated that the order had issued to curb the use of mobile phones in classrooms of all Institutes that are affiliated to the University.

The Order by Dr Singh stated that the students are not allowed to use their mobile phones during a class, i.e. using mobiles for social media like Whatsapp and Facebook, etc. It further stated that the students caught in violation of the order will be prosecuted for the act of indiscipline and may even face an action.

The use of mobile phones during classes in the State Universities and degree colleges of Uttar Pradesh has been restricted for many years. Sources state that the use of mobile phones will hamper the education that they receive through the class. However, the news about banning mobile phones in state universities and degree colleges have been debunked by the UP Government.
