Upper Age Limit of UPSC IAS Exam may be Reduced

Age limit set for appearing for the Civil Services Examination might be reduced by the Union Public Service Commission. Currently, the age limit set for students to be eligible in order to appear for the exam is from 21 to 32 years (for general candidates).

There have been speculations that the upper age limit might come down to 26 years. UPSC is considering to bring down the age bar by six years in the years to come. The changes will apply only to the general category students. Age limit for SC/ST category students will not be changed.

There have been various discussions on this matter, however, the decision will be finalized by the Central Government.

A panel was appointed by the Central Government in August 2015 to revise the civil services examination norms. BS Baswan, former Education Secretary was appointed the head of the panel.

All the reputed officers’ posts in All-India Services such as IAS, IFS, IPS, IRS, and IRTS are filled based on the results of the Civil Services Exam.

Lakhs of students appear for the exam every year to find a place among the elite officers of India. The General and OBC category students are given six attempts to qualify the exam whereas SC/ ST candidates are not bound by the same rule.
