US B-Schools Witness Fall in MBA Applications, Asia-Pacific and Europe Record Surge

MBA continues to dominate the PG management courses worldwide. Popular B-Schools in the USA witnessed a fall in the number of MBA applications in 2018, while Canada, Europe, and Asia-Pacific regions witnessed a surge.

US B-Schools Witness Fall in MBA Applications, Asia-Pacific and Europe Record Surge

Business schools in the US (United States) have witnessed a fall in the number of candidates applying for the MBA course. On the other hand, B-Schools located in Canada,Europe and Asia-Pacific regions recorded an increase in the number of candidates opting for postgraduate management courses. Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC), which conducts the GMAT exam, has made the observation in this regard through a survey.

As per the GMAC survey, the US experienced almost 7% decline in the number of MBA applications, including a 10.5% fall in international application volume and 1.8% decline in domestic volume across all management education courses/ programmes. In contrast, the Asia-Pacific region witnessed a surge of 8.9%, Canada with 7.7% growth and 3.2 percentage increase in Europe.

The GMAC survey was based on responses from 1,087 graduate business courses in 363 universities across the globe. Among various management programmes, MBA has continued its position as one of the most sought-after courses worldwide.

GMAC Survey Highlights

Here are some of the major highlights of the GMAC survey –

  • Like 2017, MBA continued to report a similar volume of applications in 2018.
  • Nine in 10 management programmes/ courses indicate their candidate pool in 2018 is academically or similarly qualified compared with 2017.
  • From the year 2016 to 2018, MBA admissions in the Asia-Pacific region have increased from 73,520 to 94,555, which mean a growth of 28.6 per cent.
  • Compared to 2016, the MBA application volume in the Asia-Pacific region is 67% of programmes, Europe with 61% and 62% in Canada.
  • In all, the overall demand for management education/ management courses remains almost the same in 2018.

President and CEO of GMAC, Mr. Sangeet Chowfla revealed that there are wide regional changes in the volume of MBA applications worldwide. There are several factors that are responsible for the decline in the demand for MBA courses in the US B-Schools, he added.
