Medical colleges in the Philippines offering MBBS to international students are recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC), India. Thus, a student who holds an MBBS degree from the Philippines is eligible to get a medical licence in India after meeting the requirements defined by NMC. Recently, NMC has released a draft for foreign medical graduates (FMGs) who wish to practice in India according to which, students will have to clear the National Exit Test (NExT) to get a medical licence in India. If the draft is approved, the NExT will be effective from 2022. Currently, an FMG needs to qualify the FMGE entrance exam to practice medicine in India, until further changes are brought in.

Part-Time Jobs in the Philippines for MBBS Students

It is highly recommended for you, a medical student in the Philippines, to focus only on the MBBS course throughout the course of study and apply for a part-time job only in case of financial constraints. MBBS is an extensive course that requires a minimum of 8 to 10 hours of learning daily. So, you will hardly get time for a part-time job. However, if you still need to apply for a part-time job while studying MBBS in the Philippines you can look at some of the following options:

On-campus part-time jobs: Initially, you should look for any part-time job opportunities on campus like working in the cafeteria, labs, library, front office, on-campus stores etc. This will save a lot of time and money which may otherwise be spent on commuting.

Tutor: As a medical student, you can provide private tuition to local people staying nearby in science subjects or for any entrance exams.

Online part-time jobs: You can also look for online part-time jobs like data entry, video editing, content editing etc. based on the skills you possess.

Types of Work Visas in the Philippines

A foreign national visiting the Philippines for employment purposes must secure a work visa from the Bureau of Immigration (BI), Philippines. They must also abide by mandatory rules as defined by government agencies of the Philippines before starting work in the Philippines. The types of the Philippines work visas are defined as follows:

  • 9(g) Pre-Arranged Employee Commercial Visa

  • 9(g) Pre-Arranged Employee Non-Commercial Visa

  • Special Non-Immigrant Visa or 47(A)(2)

  • Special Non-Immigrant Visa under E.O. 226, as amended by R.A. 8756 (ROHQ)

Special Work Permit (SWP)

A Special Work Permit (SWP) is the work permit granted to foreigners who have short-term employment or work-related project in the Philippines for upto 6 months. The local company where individual works must be willing to serve as Petitioner. One can apply for an SWP for 3 months and get it extended for another 3 months during their stay in the Philippines.

Till the time an SWP is valid, the status of the foreign national remains as a tourist. Once the SWP is issued, the  Bureau of Immigration (BI) grants an official SWP that serves as the work permit. It normally takes about 2 to 3 weeks for the approval of a Special Work Permit (SWP) in the Philippines.

Provisional Work Permit (PWP)

A Provisional Work Permit (PWP) is a work permit granted to foreigners who hold temporary visitor visas but wish to continue working in the Philippines in future. For this, a person needs to get the approval of an employment visa application (9g or 9d) from the Bureau of Immigration (BI).

PWP is valid for 3 months from the date of its issuance or until the 9g visa is issued. A PWP work permit is extendible until a work visa in the Philippines has been approved.

Alien Employment Permit (AEP)

A foreign national who intends to work in the Philippines must hold an AEP issued by the government of the Philippines from the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE). An AEP is required for persons planning for a longer period of employment in the Philippines. The validity of an AEP can last between 1 year to 5 years depending on the contract of employment. A candidate must apply directly for an AEP or through the petitioning employer at the DOLE Regional Office.

Work Permit for Students Pursuing MBBS in Philippines

Candidates who seek employment in the Philippines after completing their medical program will have to pass the licensure exams for physicians (board exam for doctors of the Philippines). The Philippines Board of Medicine, a professional regulatory body that is controlled and supervised by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) of the Philippines also conducts this exam.

Usually, candidates seeking long-term employment in the Philippines apply under the 9(G) visa category. In order to apply for this visa, candidates will have to request his or her employer to submit an Alien Employment Permit request with the Bureau of Immigration. The request is processed before issuing a 9(G) visa. Candidates will be required to submit the following documents:

  • A valid passport

  • A Bureau of Immigration Clearance Certificate

  • One passport photo (3.5- 4.5 cm)

  • A copy of the employment contract

  • The applicant’s Curriculum Vitae

  • A copy of the Alien Employment Permit

  • A consolidated General Application Form from the Bureau of Immigration

  • The Company’s Corporate Documents i.e. Articles of Incorporation, Certificate of Registration and a copy of tax-return filings.
